A couple of years ago I gave up looking for my grandfather, just kept hitting brick walls! For the last few days something has been telling me to continue which I have and happy to say I found out something today I didn't know. There is a huge chuck of time in which I cannot find anything for him, sadly my dad has passed and there is nobody else that I can ask for info (my grandfather died when my dad was 13 so he didn't know much. This is what I have so far:

HARRY BURT born 28/02/1897 80 Kingsdown Road Islington

Parents: Geroge Burt & Mary Burt formally Allen

1901 Census shows him living at home at 25 Scholefield Road Islington

On 9/8/1911 Harry enrolled on the TS Exmouth Training Ship (Found this out today!)

He was discharged on 22/10/1912

THEN THERE IS NOTHING

Until he marries my nan on the 11/08/1945 My nan was born Stella Lally on 25/05/1918

However, I have the marriage cert for them and she is listed as Stella L Stone (which is my uncles surname due to different dads) but there is no marriage cert for Stella Marrying a Stone

Then Harry dies on the 18/03/1966 living at 287 The Glade, Croydon.

Can ANYONE help me find harry between 1912 and 1945? I don't know why I am feeling that I have to keep looking but I jus don't know where he was.

Joanna Burt

This is great a fantastic start.....thank you so much!

I had assumed that Harry was previously married as he was a widower when he married my nan (on marriage cert) and there was a big age gap, Harry was 48 and Stella was 27.

Where his first wife Kathleen Burt is listed above would you know what "female unpaid domestic duties" mean?? Surely he didn't marry her for domestic duties? If this is the case I can see a pattern here....... one thing I remember my dad/uncle saying was that he met my nan as she used to clean for him :-S

'unpaid domestic duties' is official 'speak' for housewife.

In other words, she stayed at home and looked after the home and family

There is also a 'paid domestic duties' category

Thank you guys <3

I am slightly confused now hahaha

So are we (you) saying that Harry was married to Kathleen? will purchase a cert for this.

But then who is "Kitty Sullivan" - is this a shortened name for Kathleen and Sullivan being her maiden name?

And who is Joseph?

Maddie Report 2 Mar 2018 12:08

just saying it is a possible marriage, Kitty can be short for Kathleen and possibly 2 sons born but certificates would be needed to prove or disprove

Sorry, this record is officially closed. Check if you can open a closed record.

Thank you Erika <3

What does it mean when it states "closed record" xx

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 2 Mar 2018 12:53

Why are some records in the 1939 Register officially closed?
Answer:

Individuals’ records remain closed for 100 years from their date of birth (100 year rule). Records remain closed for people born less than 100 years ago until proof of death is verified. As more records become open as a result of the 100 year rule, more records will become available to search and view online at Findmypast. Of the 41 million records, approximately 13 million (around 32%) will be closed at publication. The 1939 Register will be updated regularly.

No help with Harry, I'm afraid, but just a comment and correction re your tree on Ancestry, Joanna -

The second family you list for George, with wife Louisa and several children, is incorrect.

That's a different George.
He's with Louisa and children in 1901, in Ashford, Kent, when your George is with Mary Ann and family.
George & Louisa's children all have mms Cobb, so this will be that other George's marriage:
Marriages Mar 1895 (>99%)
Burt George William Bridge 2a 989
Cobb Louisa Rhoda Bridge 2a 989

so..... I dragged myself out (in the snow) to the local research centre to look on the electoral register for the third member of the household (above 1939 Harry & Kathleen Burt, 26 Bensham Manor Road). They have informed me that there is a third person but it is as closed record presumably that person could still be alive. Apparently I can request for the info but may not be fortunate :-(

Will purchase the certs for this "Joseph" and see if it gives any light...... will look for Joseph on here and hope for the best. Feeling like I'm going to hit a blank here

Thank you everyone <3
