Can you tell us which Census, and where you have found this?...

Chris :)

(seems a bit confusing, all these Samuel's!)

Chris Ho great link??
He's the right age for my g grandfathers brother Samuel...
I have found a Samuel right age on the census with a wife and daughter. The daughter year of birth is one year after my g grandfathers birth....plus living in vicinity of my g g grandmother (his ex wife)...cannot find any birth records for the daughter ??

Well could be, if age is wrong...(see him on below Crew list)

On FMP - no idea if relevant, as age is not given, and I don't have access to the record

Powder Samuel — — 1893 New South Wales Passenger Lists New South Wales, Australia

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 12 Mar 2018 16:50

Several GR members have a Samuel Powder born London c1852 in trees, so perhaps they know something which hasn't been unearthed by researchers on here.

Or - they could be guessing, of course

Try sending messages - good luck

ADDED

I see you have him in your tree as having been born in 1856.

Was looking at those earlier. James Henry married her Sister, Adaline...

(he was Steward Deceased, 1901, and 1904 Ships Steward (no mention of Deceased on that one) don't think anybody knew!, looking at other children Marriages, Ancestry, London)

Chris :)

http://search.jerripediabmd.net/

(saw Truscott Baptisms on above, didn't see any reference Powder, tried Podger, Podester in case, also)

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 12 Mar 2018 16:44

It may be that he was not born in the UK . As a Ship Steward, he could have been on shore leave when he met his wife.

The witnesses to the marriage all had the surname MARTIN, so no help there

Samuel certainly is an enigma. Whilst his later seafaring life may explain why he can't be found on later census records, he should turn up on earlier ones.
Even his father, Samuel Powder, a shopman, can't be found. He is not mentioned as being deceased on the MC (I know this doesn't mean he wasn't) but you would think that some reference to him would show. :-S

A wife in every port? ;-)

Divorce was rare & expensive, but bigamous or common law marriages were not unknown.

Have you considered that he might have jumped ship in some far flung country? It’s a pity we haven’t found him on a crew list. That way we’d have a good chance of working out their destinations.

Thank you.
I do have this info but Samuel has disappeared...I’ve found some Powders about the right age in the workhouse and asylum but just not certain same man.
The story is he died at sea and thus my g grandfather was born posthumously...sometimes I wonder if that’s a crock as maritime records are normally accurate...I’ve also tried to find a divorce from Mary but to no avail...it really is a mystery...there is a Samuel on the census up in Liverpool after the time of his alleged drowning...love a mystery ????

He seems to have materialised out of nowhere to get married and father his children, then disappeared without trace.

Hello
I’ve hit a wall with the father of Samuel Powder(c1874).
My “brick wall” Samuel Powder was married to Mary Truscott.
Hope this helps my cause ??
