Warwickshire Burials Transcription
First name(s) Norman
Last name Johnson
Death year 1911
Burial year 1911
Cemetery Birmingham, Handsworth Cemetery
County Warwickshire
Country England
---------------------------------------------------

1939 register: (Original states Frank's middle initial as E- not S)

Johnson Household (2 People) 282 Haslucks Green Road , Solihull U.D., Warwickshire, England

Frank S Johnson 09 Mar 1875 Male Collector (Accounts) Married
Edith Johnson 25 Jun 1876 Female Unpaid Domestic Duties Married
-----------------------------------------

Probate:
Johnson Frank Ernest of 282 Haslucks Green Road Shirley Solihull Warwickshire died 29 December 1963 Probate Birmingham to Edith May Mayfield (wife of Charles Henry Mayfield) and the said Charles Henry Mayfield electrical engineer. £29987

(I believe Edith Mayfield was Frank's sister)
---------------------------

I think the confusion over adoption is that when Edith and Frank marry in 1909, Frank has the middle name Thompson- which might imply he was the father of Sidney and Norman.

All three children have mother's maiden name Beeston- which indicates that Edith was their mother.

As AG suggests, I think the next step would be to get the 1909 marriage certificate.

Sorry that should be adopted by Frank Ernest Johnson

Chappers5 Report 20 Mar 2018 17:41

Thank you everyone, I am new to this and only joined last week, still finding my feet. I will recap for everyone to see.
My grandfather who I knew as Sidney Johnson was born on 17/01/1909 to Frank Thompson a commercial traveller and Edith Thompson (nee Beeston) 96 Alfred Road, Handsworth .
I believe he was subsequently adopted by Frank Ernest Thompson of 15 Gt Lister St, Birmingham, son of Thomas Johnson a master butcher who was married to Fanny nee Brindley. This info I found on a scrap of paper in my dads writing with a duplicate his fathers birth certificate obtained in 1960.
I was unsuccessful in finding the marriage of Edith and Frank Thompson.
I am grateful to everyone's help and sorry for any confusion. :-S

I'm assuming so.
Lynn mentioned Frank Ernest Johnson in her last PM to me, though we hadn't had that info before.

AustinQ

AG- certainly looks a little suspect!

Think the details from that marriage certificate are needed!

Where did the Ernest come from?
Was he listed as Frank Ernest Thompson on Sidney's birth certificate?

Hmm - Thomas & Fanny's son in 1911 - sewing machine agent.
Was he living a double life ??

PM from Lynn -

Yes Sidney was my grandfather, he was born Thompson and I assume adopted by Frank Ernest Johnson. I am not expecting to be able to find why he was adopted, that would be a bonus, I would like to know more about my great grandparents. I do not have a marriage certificate only my grandfathers birth certificate which I found last year, with a different surname on.

Lynn - as AustinQ suggests, please answer in the white box at the bottom of this thread, and click "Submit" - then everyone can see what you say.

Re marriage cert - you can buy a copy of Frank & Edith's marriage cert, as already suggested. That will give you more information.
(And us, if you let us know on this thread what the certificate says when you get it.)

Is adoption by Frank the adoption you meant in your first post? Or do you mean he was later adopted again, by someone completely different?

PM from Chapper: re birth certificate of her Grandfather

"Frank Thompson was a commercial traveller and the birth address is 96 Alfred Rd Handsworth. My grandad had a brother known as Godfrey Johnson, and I have been sent information about another brother Norman Johnson who I did not know about, but there is one years birth year discrepancy. Thanks"

Chapper, it's easier if you use the add reply box at the bottom of the page.

PM from Chappers5;

Thank you for the information, I have been unable to find any info about Edith Beeston marriage to Frank Thompson. My grandfathers birth certificate has an address in Handsworth. He was adopted before the age of three. Born in 1909

So Sydney was your grandfather, Lynn? What is it you are wanting to know - the reason for his adoption?

Do you know who adopted him? Or do you mean that Frank adopted him after marriage to Edith?

Frank was a "collector" (whatever that means) for a sewing machine company in 1911.

Do you have a copy of the 1909 marriage cert for Frank and Edith - posted above by Safc?
That would give you more info about Frank - father's name, etc, to allow us to research him.

AustinQ

AustinQ Report 20 Mar 2018 14:36

I'm not sure he/ they were adopted-

Are you able to give a little more detail from the birth certificate you have.

What was Frank's occupation?

What was the address where your grandfather was born?

Thank you, I can remember the names of two of his children, forgotten the names of the two. If my Grandfather was adopted it is good to know he would be too young to remember it.

Thank you safc, this is helpful. I have a copy of a birth certificate copied in 1960 suggesting his name was originally Thompson, even though I knew him as Johnson. The parents Christian names are the same and he definitely had a brother called Godfrey. I didn't know about Norman
