Glyn Report 7 Apr 2018 23:56

I don’t know where I got those names I’m afraid. I thought I’d seen Kathleen Mathias in an entry but going back through my notes and family tree listings I can’t find it. So perhaps they’re not Christopher’s parents at all. If I get the marriage certificate that will give the fathers name. Did they have birth certificates that long ago?
Apologies.

Sorry me again. I’m trying to order the marriage certificate for Christopher and Leah but I can’t find a record of it or any reference number. Am I missing something. I’ve found I can’t order a birth certificate for Christopher as records start from 1837. This is GRO site. Should I be trying elsewhere?

Well, this is probably where you have seen Kathleen - A family tree on Ancestry??:

Dunn Family Tree Public Member Tree 2 attached records, 3 sources
Name: Christopher Greenaway
Birth: Abt 1823 - Monmouthshire
Parents: Christopher Greenaway, Kathleen Mathias *******
Spouse: Lea Davies

Unfortunately, I have been trying to get into the tree for several days now and I keep getting that stupid little man panning for gold and a message to say the page is temporarily unavailable !!!!

Just a point to remember - when ordering a cert from the GRO where the name has been recorded incorrectly - always order it under that incorrect spelling as if you order it with the right spelling they will tell you that it cannot be found which will cause further delay and you may possibly lose the money you have paid!!

So, just order the cert above under Christopher GREENWAY - don't bother mentioning the name of the bride.............

Great thank you. Yes I tried the reference fromAndy and it referred me to free bmd. I couldn’t find it on there so I thought I was doing something wrong, but I’ll just order from GRO under wrong spelling and see what happens. Thank you all
I think Chris the larceny 1859 is Christopher’s father Christopher so when young Christopher was also dishonest he was merely following a family tradition!!!
It must have been a hard life back then but no excuses I have thieving ancestors which is interesting. Lol Glyn

Yes Chris it’s Christophers son, Christopher I’m related directly to. My great great grandfather. Rest of family interesting and help to get background and more rounded out family picture.
I think the baby who died, John, was their child, born out of wedlock, because Mary was born in 1849 and they married 1850, so it didn’t seem to be a problem with them!

Of Christopher’s 3 sons I’m related to Edward. He’s the one who married Dora Withey and on a previous search I had fantastic help to trace her family back on her parents line as I’d drawn a blank.
Is that what you meant Chris?

Thanks for all that extra information Chris. Certificates ordered so may get more info from them when they arrive.
You know you said You had sources for newspapers . . I asked for help from the newspaper archives in Wales about my uncles death and they weren’t very helpful.

My family and I were at home when I was young and on the local news we heard about his death, and that was the way my Dad learnt about his brothers death. No phones at home in those days so it was on the news before we heard by post. I wondered if you could just look and see if you can find a record of it in the newspapers. I don’t know for certain if it was in any local paper but it was on the news as I said.
His name was Henry Edward Christopher Greenaway ( but known as Ted). His death was 23rd August 1963. He was operating a crane that touched overhead electrical wires and he was killed instantly. He lived in Ynysybwl as far as I remember, so that’s Glamorgan.
If you’re busy then no problem, but I thought Id ask
Thanks

Sorry Glyn, Welsh newspapers online, only look to go to about 1919...(you would need relevant archives to search)

Well not much success I’m afraid. GRO came back that they couldn’t find Christopher’s birth certificate.
The marriage certificate for Christopher and a Leah came today, and neither parent is filled in.
So I guess that’s the end of that lead to try and find Christopher’s father.
Any other ideas please? I was really disappointed with the marriage certificate

Morning Glyn, is there anything at all written in the box for father's names. Are there other clues on the marriage certificate? Addresses/ Witnesses?

Is this the birth certificate you ordered?

Very unusual that it can't be found when the volume and page number are present.

You could order the birth certificate direct from Merthyr Tydfil registry office.

No neither parent is on marriage certificate Austin Q. I think Argyll Gran is correct that Leah’s father is John Davies because he is on the form as a witness to the marriage, although not listed as any relation to Leah. The other witness is Mrs Bower or Bowen whoever that might be!!!!

Glyn Report 20 Apr 2018 09:36

Yes that’s the birth certificate, and I put all the references in. They emailed back to say it couldn’t be found.
This birth certificate will only tell me Christopher senior and Leah are the parents won’t it, not who Christopher seniors parents are.

Pontypridd library holds all the archived newspapers for the area. They've looked things up for me in the past and emailed me the articles. The man dealing with this is Hywel Matthews and is very helpful indeed.
