Thanks Argyllgran! I will send this link to my cousin and her husband! No idea who posted it - strangely they DO have a son called Conor but he wouldn’t have have all that info as his Dad told me all they knew last night, which I then posted. Think they will be thrilled with all this and hopefully will be able to get in touch and learn more
Regards Maureen

Thread here (by your cousin's son, Maureen ??) with mention of Delia and James, though not any more helpful clues about either of them:

Ok, just had message from cousins husband with all he knows (not much unfortunately)
His father James Albert Murphy don 1-9-1921. His mother Mary Josephine McManus on birth cert Don 19-4-1932

His father researched years ago and found Delia Reid and met her in 1970 prior to her dearth. Nothing about her in writing though. She them lived in Ranaleigh Dublin. She was born c1916. All other details on Mary’s birth cert correct but Delia called herself McManus through shame, and went to Dublin to give birth. The child was adopted by the Burns family who are still in touch. The grandfather James McManus was a policeman, Guarda in Middleton CoCork. t the police station they said a lot of the Guardi came from Roscommon. Don’t know if any help but it’s all we have to go on!

Thanks ErikaH. I will get in touch with him and
I will try to find out about Delia
I know census records re Frederick and Louisa, what I meant was as Delia born after 1911 and guessing James McManus too there are no census links to possibly connect them to Frederick in any way!

There are census records and marriage info about her on this thread

Who told him that Delia’s surname had been Reid?

Sorry to persist, but he needs to provide a reason for thinking the birth cert was incorrect, and I'm doing so only as a means to try to help you (and him)

He says he met the lady - when and where?

Thank you ArgyllGran! Yes, most probably that is what happened. Know all vague, and presumably my cousins husband has previously tried to find out, but had no luck. Don't think we are going to be able to find out more.

If she was born in Ireland as suggested, her birth record may have been destroyed in a fire at the Public Records Office in 1922, when many records were lost.

There's no record of my late mother-in-law's birth in 1921, presumably for that reason.

It is all too vague for anyone to really help you

If you can get your relative to give you PROOF that her name was Reid, further checks can be made, although earlier posts indicate there is no record anywhere of a birth in that name

I was just told she lived 1915 - 1970 approx.???

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 16 Aug 2018 15:50

How do you know Delia was born 1915, if you don't have her birth or death certs and she never married?

(Apologies if I've missed that info somewhere in the thread.)

Maureen

Maureen Report 16 Aug 2018 13:23

Not clear to me either really - just been told by him that she never actually married the father, James McManus - and should have been formerly Reid, not Murphy. It was thought that Delia had a connection with Frederick St. John Lacy, probably that he was her Uncle.
If I could find out more about James McManus - his parents and siblings, could be that a sister connected somewhere. We know Frederick had an Aunt, Louisa Browne nee Treacy. Unfortunately no Census records or information.

Why does your relative think that the maiden name on the birth cert is not correct?

Is there any documentary proof that her name was ever Reid?

And why does he think there is any possible connection with Lacy?

This has not been made clear.

I have found a Mary J McManus b Cork J/M 1941 - which would be too late unless actually a christening? Also a Mary B Burns m Cork J/M 1952 Vol 5, to a Timothy Murphy - may be red herring

Thanks everyone - still baffled, have been researching new information from my cousins husband, but still no breakthrough.
On the Birth Certificate for my cousins husband's mother: Mary Josephine McManus mother Delia McManus formerly Murphy.
Was told not correct as Delia never married the father - James McManus (who was a policeman in Middleton Co Cork)
Delia apparently should be formerly Reid
Mary Josephine was adopted by the Burns family
Any info appreciated!

Thanks everyone - wish I could find out more about Delia Reid! If Frederick St. John Lacey was indeed her Uncle, wonder if the link lies with relative of his widow, or perhaps Aunt Louisa nee Treacy?

ME Evans aged 7yrs can be found living in Cork (1911) with her family father named Richard...Engineer. There was a significant age difference when she married F. St.John Lacy and I am surprised he only left the amount stated in the Will...

Thanks again - not our Delia then? Wonder if Delia was a Middle name which she went by? Interesting interview about Frederick St John Lacy
