I don't think he's the Newcastle man. If father's name was Patrick and he was a farmer then I think Michael was more likely born in Ireland. Loads of farmers in Ireland but we would more likely think of them as crofters or small holders.

I have the marriage certificate and he states his age as 28 years and Elizabeth's as 26 years.

? If day and month, but not year were correct on the 1939

and if correct - 1901 Ireland census shows aged 26 b 1885. But the year is more likely to be 1884 (just 1901 - 26 = 1885, but would cover only birth 1st Qtr 1885, leaving ¾ of 1884 to play with)

1943 Q4 death aged 59 would fit with a September 1884 birth

(Perhaps whoever registered the death knew correct age)

Do you have the marriage certificate for declared ages in 1917?

The 1891 Patrick in Newcastle is a Labourer

Wow, you lovely people are just amazing!!!! I thank you so very much for all of your efforts, and this has made sense of some of the mysteries in the family.
Now I wonder if he was the Michael born in Newcastle? because he's obviously a bit of a scally so could have altered his actual birth date as well.

Well, I think that proves that we have the right man on the 1939 register.

I'm just not finding a Michael Conway birth in Ireland to match the DOB given on the 1939 register.

Surrey Mirror 16 november 1928

Surrey Mirror 12 May 1939 -

Arrears of £287 - when Michael Joseph Conway, a Reigate painter, appeared on warrant at Reigate Police court yesterday (Thursday) for being in arrear with regard to maintenance of his wife and children, the Clerk stated that the arrears, under a 17s 6d a week order made in 1928, now amounted to £287 18s 6d. Directing an adjournement of the case so long as Conway paid 22s 6d a week (including 5s 0ff the arrears) the Mayor (Alderman HJ Hamblen) intimated that, subject to regular payments, the Bench were prepared to remit £250 of the amount outstanding, leaving the arrears to be met at £37 18s 6d. Conway, who had been out of work for a long period, but was now in casual employment, promised to do his best. Of his seven children, the Clerk said, four were now over 16, and did not come under the order.

I can't get into the first article that AustinQ has shown. I think the column runs over 2 pages and I'm only seeing the first page. There is this article

BOROUGH OF REIGATE.
At the Reigate Borough Bench Thursday last week, an application for separation order, the grounds of desertion, was made by Airs. Elizabeth Ann Conway. 41, North Albert-road. Reigate, against her husband, Conway, JO. Upper West-street. Reigate.
19 October 1928 - Surrey Mirror - Reigate, Surrey, England

The article shows that they hadn't live together since February 1927. Elizabeth and their seven children aged from 10 years to 1 year were living with her parents. Michael's occupation is given as a labourer. Elizabeth was granted maintenance of £1. 7s. 6d. each week.

Hi again, I think that the 1939 Register is the correct place for him living at the time, he is just around the corner from wife and children, and not a lot of mining happened in Reigate - so he probably switched occupations. The only other death that I thought possible was 1972 Surrey South Eastern, (Reigate area), which has a birth abt 1885. Still flummoxed on birthdate though and as for his father, Patrick being a farmer can't find him in English census.
Confused … Ingrid.

rootgatherer Report 13 Aug 2018 22:53

Ingrid, that doesn't look like your Michael in 1939 then as that man is a Journeyman Painter so unlikely to have been a miner.

Do you have an approximate year of death and place of death for your Michael please?

Meliji

Meliji Report 13 Aug 2018 22:34

Thank you to all who added information to this thread, I have a little more info. Michael was living in Pritchard Street, Tonyrefail, South Wales and working as a miner/and also in the Royal Field Artillery as a Gunner in 1919 - both occupations on his marriage cert. Father Patrick's occupation apparently is Farmer.

If he remained in Surrey, this is the only possible death I can see but age a little out from the 1939 register.

We really need Ingrid to come back and help us out here.
