ArgyllGran Report 10 Sep 2018 10:25

You're welcome, Bernard.

It might be worth contacting the residential home, if it's still in existence. Although she died 12 years ago, you never know, they might possibly still have records.

Bernard

Bernard Report 10 Sep 2018 10:16

A step closer! Death Cert suggests Therese was unmarried as there is no entry in the section 'Maiden surname of woman who has married'. She ended her days in a residential home in Southwark and was a retired 'Newspaper Worker'.

I'll do a bit more digging around and report back.

Thanks again, especially ArgyllGran who supplied the Certificate references.

Thanks for such a detailed response, Bernard.

I don't see a marriage for Therese in any country whose marriages are covered by Ancestry.

I suppose it's possible that she lived abroad for a while, married abroad, and then returned to London and reverted to her maiden surname by 1963 - but that's just wild conjecture. More likely that she didn't marry.

(Or went abroad and married after 1964, and is maybe still living abroad!)

Bernard Report 3 Sep 2018 16:05

Hello All. Hope this response isn’t too cluttered!

AustinQ 29 Aug: Christopher & Doris’s marriage confirmed. Doris’s death confirmed. Remaining note re Christopher could be ‘ours’ – geographically possible.

Greyghost 29 Aug: Re 76 Westwood Lane. Can’t make a connection here.

ErikaH 3 x 29 Aug: 1) Confirm death and marriage details.
2) Never been sure of correct spelling.
3) Confirm re-marriage and death.

ArgyllGran 29 Aug: Confirm travel details. No knowledge of research items.

ErikaH 4 x 29 Aug:
1) Not aware of a child death.
2) Looks as though these entries connect. There is a connection with Hampshire, and Bexleyheath/Welling was where she lived.
3) Confirm birth of Terence. Indian passport issued.
4) This looks like Christopher’s second wife’s marriage, pre-widowhood.
AustinQ: 29 Aug: Confirm births. Shaun’s twin Brian absent!

ArgyllGran 6 x 29 Aug: 1) Family was living in Welling, Kent.
2) As previous entry, Shaun’s twin Brian is absent.
Please do not contact ‘ltmahon’. Recent bereavement.
3) All correct. Again, please do not follow up due 2) above.
4) Carol Ann is my wife. Stuart is our nephew.
5) Birth is ‘ours’. Have ordered Death Certificate but this assumes she never married.
6) Interesting.

Will advise when Death Certificate arrives.

Best wishes to all.

Don't apologise for that, Bernard - we do it because we love the thrill of the chase!
We're always delighted to have a new puzzle to solve.

Your wife's name is Carol Ann - I take it that she's the same Carol Ann who has Therese Mahon born 1926 in Dublin on her GR tree?

In that case, that must be Therese E D Mahon, who was on the Electoral Roll for Paddington in 1963-4, and probably the Therese Mahon who died in 2006 - records posted on page 1 of this thread.

There was a Therese Mahon living in St Pancras in 1965, but without middle initials I don't if that's her or not.
There's also a Pamela M Zinkin at the same address - 11 The Grange:

Therese Mahon
in the London, England, Electoral Registers, 1832-1965
Name: Therese Mahon
Year: 1965
County or Borough: Camden
Ward or Division/Constituency: St Pancras North
Reference Number: LCC/PER/B/3061

I don't know what happened to her between the 1940's and 1963, but assuming that's the same person, she should certainly have been traceable in 1963.

If it were my search, I would buy a copy of the death cert, to see if she's the right Therese.

EDIT:

Alternatively, if she returned to Ireland, there's this burial in Dublin. I don't know when this Therese was born, so can't say if she's a real possibility or not;

Therese Mahon
in the UK and Ireland, Find A Grave Index, 1300s-Current
Name: Therese Mahon
Death Date: 22 Jul 1968
Cemetery: Glasnevin Cemetery
Burial or Cremation Place: Dublin, County Dublin, Ireland

Another PM from Bernard - have asked him to return and post on the thread. Copied and pasted here -

First, an apology. I didn’t anticipate people would undertake original research on this matter, and was merely hoping that someone might already have knowledge of Therese’s history.

Therese D Mahon (born 1926) was last seen in Welling, Kent where the family was then living. She went out one evening in the 40s before the end of the war and was never seen again. It was generally felt that she probably perished in an air raid. There were no known family or personal problems which could have led to her leaving home. That only leaves accidental or what might be described as ‘sinister’ events.

The family were Catholic and made the usual checks through the Church and Salvation Army etc and over the years family members have carried out the usual search of records.

I can confirm the following details of my wife’s (Carol Ann) family.

Her Mother was Patricia Ellen Ember nee Mahon whose siblings were Shaun & Brian (twins), Terence, Therese, and half-brother Desmond.

Patricia’s Mother was Doris E Gracie 1904-1938, and her father was Christopher Mahon (my record shows dob: 1890). He was Irish and had a Naval/Merchant Seaman background, and the family spent many years in India. Doris returned to England for Patricia’s birth, taking her back to India where she spent her first 14 years. Terence was born in India.

After Doris’s death at the early age of 33 Christopher returned to England, settling in the South East. He married Florence Parkinson and their son was Desmond and they subsequently moved to Brixham in Devon.

Once again, I apologise for causing you to spend so much time on this.

Best wishes.

Have our contributions been helpful, Bernard?

Do you think Therese E D Mahon is/was the person you're interested in?

This is part of my wife's family. A number of her relatives have done exhaustive searches over the years. My posting was a last-ditch attempt (perhaps a naive one!!) to see if there was an instant reaction.

Thanks to all for your contributions.

Another possible avenue to pursue -

Go to "Search" at the top of this page, then "Search all member trees".
Search for Shaun Mahon, and you'll see that someone named Carol Ann has him in her tree.
Click on "Find out more" and send her a message explaining your interest.
You never know, she might reply - though there could be many reasons why if she doesn't.

Carol Ann also has a Therese Mahon born 1926 in Dublin in her tree.
So does someone named Stuart.

The undertakers were Wright Funeral Services, 106 High Street, Great Missenden, HP16 0BE.
Even though the funeral was ten years ago, it might be worth writing to them - they might be able to pass on a message to the relatives, who might know something about Therese.

A tree on Ancestry shows Patricia and Shaun, plus two other male siblings (one of whom will be Terence) and one female. Also one male half-sibling.

Unfortunately their details have been kept private.

Where did the last contact happen - i.e. - where was Therese at that time?
