Find Ancestors

In my husband's family tree I have John Riley born around 1864/6 but I am not sure where. I have it as Ireland but I am not sure where I got this information.!! I do know he married Ellen McAdam in 1894. She came from Spennymoor and they had 9 children of which 3 died. I would like to look further into John Riley but as there are so many I don't know where to start. Any help I would be grateful.

The marriage cert would normally give you the name and occupation of his father, but John Riley is a very common name.

There is this one living with his brother's family who is in Durham in the 1891 census and he's a coalminer. He is only about 7 or 8 miles from Spennymoor:-

I think the details from Kucinda are the correct ones as I know there is a Catherine on a headstone who was my husband's grandma although he never really knew her.

Will a marriage certificate for John Riley show where he was born or just where he was living at the time of his marriage to Ellen ?

The marriage certificate will only show where he was living at the time and not where born, but his father's name and occupation (if he knew them) would help with looking for a birth or baptism. The witnesses names can also sometimes be helpful if you can find them in a census.

Thanks for your help. I was just puzzled as to how he could be born in Ireland in one census, then 10 years later he is saying he was born in Spennymoor. I was just have to come to a dead end on that one as there are too many John Riley's for me to look into.

This seems a better match than Gwen's. The names and birth order match Tigget's 1881, although the ages are a bit off.
Ancestry and FMP both give the same ages as FreeCEN

Before FMP started playing up there was also a Mary Anne 1857 and a Michael 1861 baptised in Dundalk, Louth by John and Ellen. Will keep trying to get back to them !!
