My profile picture is of William Field 1890-1917. After 5.5 years made contact with his brother Harry's descendants. They have re found his 1914-1915 WW1 diary and copying it for me know. But got this yesterday

"Something I have learnt from mom is that William had a sweetheart called Miriam Peters. Bessie & Harry visited her in later years – she never married.
Apparently became a Head Teacher at a school somewhere in Sandwell. When retired she lived in a bungalow in Causeway Green in Oldbury."

I would love to add my 1st sweetheart ?? to the family tree, but struggling finding her or a clear death record in Oldbury/West Brom. As a head teacher has anybody idea of search's for Head teachers assuming she would have retired 1950s?

Thank you for the looks to date as the life story summary is from Harry Fields daughter, Margaret Field who is 89 years young, It may not be perfect. Some how I found on search Teachers Registration 1914-1948 Miriam Peters Year 1920, address Oldbury, first position 1905, alternative Name Butler. Lets hope she was the sweetheart not Margaret's headteacher. But ticks a number of boxes.

That looks good, no idea how you found quick rise to Head Mistress & Mistress In Charge. More ticks in box.

Could this summary mean she was Mistress in Charge up to 1948? at approx. 61 years old? One of those now could she have divorced/separated but used Peters. No-idea working that one out need the class of 1948? Pinged Margaret's daughter and asked her to ask her mum if she knew of the school. May hear later tomorrow?

She registered in 1920, so I think the 1919- was only to the time she registered (1920) , she may or may not have stayed put or gone on to other things.

I wondered whether either men returning from war, or her marriage affected her 'demotion' from headmistress.

There was only the one entry on the Teachers' Registration Council Registers 1914-1948 for her, for when she registered in 1920, so no entry for 1948 to check out.

as per the address Andy found on the probate record he posted, it comes up with a bungalow....

Was ' Mrs Butler' in the poem below, 'your' Miriam??? it seems according to the article below Allan Ahlberg did attend The Good Shepherd, but maybe it's just a coincidence...he was born in 1938.
__________________________________________________

"Allan Ahlberg, 68, is the author of The Jolly Postman trilogy, which was illustrated by his late wife Janet and sold over five million copies. Other books include Peepo!, Burglar Bill, Each Peach Pear Plum and Please Mrs Butler. What's In The Book?, an exhibition of their work, is currently showing at Seven Stories, Lime Street, Newcastle upon Tyne. The Runaway Dinner is out now

I was adopted and grew up in Oldbury, in the Black Country. I went to a number of primary schools as my mother moved us several times; she was trying to get us into a house with an indoor toilet and bathroom. If you were a poor, working-class family - this sounds like something from Monty Python! - you put a notice in a newsagent's window and, if the landlords agreed, swapped with a family who wanted your house. It took her four houses, and by then I was 10.

My first primary school was The Good Shepherd; then I went to Tabernacle Street Primary, and, at seven, ended up in Rood End Primary. The classes there were big: 40 or 50, and the teaching pretty formal. I was quite dreamy and my reports always stated that I could do better. It didn't happen to me often, but if you were sent to the headmaster, he would take out a bamboo cane with one end burnt black to harden it, and bring it down on the tips of your fingers."

Please Mrs Butler
This boy Derek Drew
Keeps copying my work, Miss.
What shall I do?

Go and sit in the hall, dear.
Go and sit in the sink.
Take your books on the roof, my lamb.
Do whatever you think.

Please Mrs Butler
This boy Derek Drew
Keeps taking my rubber, Miss.
What shall I do?

Keep it in your hand, dear.
Hide it up your vest.
Swallow it if you like, my love.
Do what you think is best.

Please Mrs Butler
This boy Derek Drew
Keeps calling me rude names, miss.
What shall I do?

Lock yourself in the cupboard, dear.
Run away to sea.
Do whatever you can, my flower.
But don’t ask me.

No married women were allowed to be teachers until a new act was passed in 1919, maybe that's why she never married until she was 32yrs old.
Could have been slightly demoted after her marriage, as the new law had only just been passed
