[I've moved over here from the other thread, as this one now has more replies.]

Although that must be the family Sylvia means, that John is nearly 40 years older than Helen if she was actually born about 1861. Can't be Helen's brother.

Where did you get your info from, Sylvia?
Are you sure you mean 1861 for Helen's birth ?

ADDED:

And if he's Mary's son, she would only have been 15 when he was born, assuming her age is given correctly in 1851 census. Not impossible - but . . .

Dates would help.

also a little more detail.

Helen Marriott...a maiden or married name.? if married where did it take place.?

Is Vincent the second marriage surname for Mary and if so where did it take place?

There is no Helen Marriott born in Scotland in 1861 which comes in the statuary registration

Sylvia

Sylvia Report 1 Feb 2019 20:31

I am wondering if anyone can help or advise me. Family folk lore says that an ancestor was in the Black Watch and I have found Helen Marriott who was born in Edinburgh in about 1861. She has a brother John also said to have been born in Edinburgh so am assuming some truth in what is said. However Mother in Law couldn't remember any names.
I have located their Mother. Mary Vincent who lived in Glastonbury Somerset but cannot trace their father. He does not appear on Helen's Marriage certificate or Johns service records. Nor have i been able to find a previous marriage for Mary Vincent who at the time of her daughter's marriage was married to James Vincent ,a Tailor.
