The 1841 census with daughter Charlott, posted by Shirley, (and which I also posted on the other thread!) isn't the correct one.

Thanks to everyone for trying to help, I realise I got my dates completely muddled when writing the request. As you have discovered Helen, also known as Ellen in one census, was born in 1826 and brother John in 1826
I was hoping to trace the father through John's Army records and discovered John Marriott or Merriott was also born in Edinburgh. John joined the Hussars and became a Chelsea Pensioner. The records were very difficult to read but mentioned Mary Vincent as mother,
This is the most frustrating search and I am happy to try and follow up all suggestions .....all help most welcome.

Where ..which site . have you seen John Marriott/Merriotts army records please,?

There isn't a marriage showing for James Vincent in Scotland.

There's this one, which might be a mistranscription - but it's not in Edinburgh area, and there's no sign of Helen and John maybe being born as Gill.

I'm only posting it because it's there, and NOT because I think it might be the right one.

Not all births or marriages were recorded at that time. I don't think we'll ever find what you're looking for.

Presumably this is the record you have for John (from Ancestry) - but more details need a Fold3 sub:

UK, Royal Hospital Chelsea Pensioner Soldier Service Records, 1760-1920
Name: John Marriott
Enlistment Age: 17
Discharge Age: 26
Birth Date: abt 1823
Birth Place: Edinburgh, Edinburgh
Enlistment Year: 1840
Discharge Year: 1849
Regiment: 10th Royal Regt Of Hussars
Regimental Number: 939

That would fit with the 1851 census.

If Helen/Ellen is stated 20 in 1841 she was born in 1819/21/..

Have you got an actual copy of Helens marriage certificate to Charles Savage.rather than a transcription.?

There is this marriage but surname is not the same.but allowing for a mistranscript.

Thank you to all those who have taken the time to help. As you all quickly realised I wrote in the wrong dates for Helen and Johns birth. Helen was born in approx 1826. I believe her brother was 3 years younger and although in one census he is said to have been born in Glastonbury his army records show Scotland as place of birth, I also believe John became a Chelsea Pensioner.
Mary Vincent appears in 1871 census living with Helen and Husband Charles. I have been struggling with this mystery for years so all suggestions most welcome.

This is the 1st time I have used this board so sorry I caused confusion

Yes I do have a copy of Helens Marriage certificate.
I also have copies of Johns Service Record from the National Archives. These are not easy to read as they were downloaded and emailed to me.
