Thanks again everyone for your help.
Thought I’d deleted that baptism for Annie.

Am I missing something here please? If the Annie on the 1911 census is the niece of Ada Charlotte And daughter of William, surely Ada's brother is William Bell Lee not William Henry Lee?

rootgatherer Report 2 Apr 2019 23:08

Ada Charlotte Lee's brother in 1891.

There's a bit here about Womenswold / Wymyneswold etc. Could be that William Lee's birthplace has been Mistranscribed as Woolwich. rather than Woolage?

From a random search on Ancestry for people born in Woolwich, some people were born in Woolwich, Kent, or Woolwich Green, Kent.
So presumably Woolage, spelled Woolwich.

For EXAMPLE ONLY (this person has nothing to do with the Lees):

Clara C Fox
in the 1901 England Census
Name: Clara C Fox
Age: 13
Estimated birth year: abt 1888
Relation to Head: Granddaughter
Gender: Female
Birth Place: Woolwich, Kent, England
Civil Parish: Womenswould
Ecclesiastical parish: Womenswould
Town: Woolwich Green
County/Island: Kent
Country: England
Street address:
Registration district: Bridge
Sub-registration district: Barham
ED, institution, or vessel: 6
Neighbors:
Piece: 791
Folio: 68
Page Number: 4
Household schedule number: 23

On the image of the 1901 census on Ancestry, William Lee's birthplace is clearly written as "Ldn Woolwich St Margarets".

But as suggested above, perhaps the enumerator was told "Woolage" but thought they were saying "Woolwich", and assumed it was the one in London,

On the 1911 census (posted on page 1), William's birthplace is given as Woolwich, Kent.

I've already mentioned that William Henry is NOT the right man, as he died in 1901, whereas Mary/Emma's husband is still alive and gardening in 1911.

I was talking to family members last night about all this. We found it really strange that Henry never mentioned Mary or her family. He also never mentioned his mother. Henry’s sons were brought up thinking he was an orphan.
Anyone else think that’s strange?

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 3 Apr 2019 15:14

Sad, but not necessarily strange.

Maybe they just had a big falling out.

rootgatherer

rootgatherer Report 3 Apr 2019 15:23

On the 1911 census William's birthplace is Woolwich Green. As ArgyllGran has said, I think the enumerator misinterpreted Woolage Green and assumed it was Woolwich.

I had already posted the 1881 and 1891 census for Ada's brother, William Bell Lee. Also his birth showing same mmn as Ada's and his death. I also posted a possible for Mary in 1939 and a possible death for her in Devon.

On the image of the 1901 census it looks more like a "G" to me rather than "St" on the birthplace so again, I think Woolage has been recorded as Woolwich. Easily done as they would sound very similar and unless the enumerator was familiar with that area, he would be none the wiser.

EDIT

Sorry, I hadn't posted the possible death for Mary. Not Devon ( where the devil did I get that from? Senior moment lol)

Re Henry George:

Henry George, born 1884, is in the workhouse in 1891 census - where was Martha? Had she abandoned him?.
He was living with William and Emma in 1901, and with his mother in 1911.
He also married in 1911.

Maybe he was ashamed of being illegitimate?

You say his sons were brought up thinking he was an orphan - what about his daughter Evelyn (on your tree) ?

Martha died before the sons were born, and so had her eventual husband Benjamin Catchpole, so maybe Henry didn't feel like explaining about his complicated background to his sons.

Is this maybe Martha in 1891, having lied about her age (or just a mistake being made) ?:

Evelyn only ever spoke about William. None of her children knew there were other brothers until 10 years ago. The children knew Jessie, Henry’s wife, but nothing about Henry, he died before any of them were born.
