I'd be extremely grateful if somebody could let me know the details of the above person in the 1940 US Federal census and any other family members. Also if there is any entry for Helen in the 1950 census please. I am searching for a Helen Knobel b abt 1929. She had a child named Rachael (no father shown on the birth certificate) in November 1946 in South Norwood, London and I'm wondering if she emigrated from America between 1940 and 1946.

I don't think the USA 1950 has been released yet. I think they have a 70 year closure period.

Helen's child Rachael was born in a 'retreat' for single mothers and subsequently adopted by my aunt and uncle who changed her name. I am trying to discover Rachael's natural birth ancestors.

As both of the major sites are playing up today I can't look at the possible record in US I saw last night but don't in any case think it was likely to be the right one.

Just an observation which may well be wrong, but given that Rachael was born 1946 and there does not seem to be a passenger record for Helen coming to the UK , I would guess perhaps that she (Helen) came from Europe either during the war or very shortly after?

The surname also shows up in South Africa so that might be a possible also?

Unless you have reason to believe she was American, I tend to agree with Rambling's suggestion that she came from Europe during the war.

And as there's no sign of her either marrying or dying in the UK, I suggest she went back there after Rachael's birth, or else changed her name - Noble would be the first thought.

How do you know she was born c1929? It would be unusual for a child's birth cert to show the mother's age.
