Good evening

I know we've always been told it time and time again never take anyone's word for granted, and Yes! that's just what I done as other family members have researched and ensured me that the information they have is correct. Well this has now bitten me on the bum, yep I've got the wrong family..... so I have had to purchase certificates and start again. Now I have got to my 2x great grandfather and a little stuck and wondered if I could be pointed to a direction of sites to further my travel in time.

Hi Samantha,

I am sure that there are many people on here who would be only too happy to try to help but you really do have to give us something to look for !!!

Can you post some details of exactly where you have become 'a little stuck' and we can do our best to try to help you?

Hi Dea

Thank you, I didn't want to burden anyone and thought it would be best to search myself.
I stopped my research a few years ago and have now decided to get back into it but so much has changed.
There were many kind people who were more than happy to help but others not so, and for that reason thought it better to ask for good sites that I could use.

Thank you Malyon

Dea

Dea Report 1 May 2019 19:46

It is still a little difficult to recommend good sites if we don't know what type of info you are looking for.

I can appreciate that you want to search for yourself but if you could at least tell us something about the area of the country you might be searching and the approximate year etc., or Century even, we might be able to be of more help.

This site is the obvious one for all births, deaths and marriages from 1837 up to around the 1970's? It is a free site

https://www.freebmd.org.uk

The GRO site is also useful for the same type of info but it now gives mothers maiden names for births pre 1911 (unlike the FreeBMB site):

https://www.gro.gov.uk

You do have to register but it is free.

There are also many other sites which cater for specific regions of the county - Lancashire is a particularly well covered area if that is of use to you ?

hi try here

Dea

Dea Report 1 May 2019 20:39

There are also the subscription sites e.g.

https://www.ancestry.co.uk

and

https://www.findmypast.co.uk

These are the two main ones and both have lots of info on that name but they require a subscription to view the info.

If you do not have a subscription then many of us on here do and are willing to do look-ups for you - all you need to do is ask....................

I'm very pleased with what I have managed to find so far this evening already with the help given for sites to use.
Using the family search site so far this is what I've achieved
My grandfather Leonard Ebdon born 1918 Devon Exeter,
His brother Ivan Ebdon born 1915 Devon Exeter
Their mother Bessie Ebdon born 1895 Devon Exeter, their father was unknown???
Bessie's siblings
Dorothy born 27 Jan 1899
Frank born 1907
Kitty born 1905
Mark born 1890
Frederick born 31 Mar 1901

Their parents being
John Ebdon born 1861
Bessie Dibble born 1863
Marriage 1882

Not bad going for an evening is it???

Samantha .................

Well done

now go to the GRO Index site, and enter all those births, and you will get the mother's maiden name.

Then you can get the marriages from Freebmd.

Also try this site ......

https://www.ukbmd.org.uk/county/devon/online_parish_clerks/

The Freereg site is also very good, as safc posted.

Hi SylviaInCanada

My grandfather's, mother's maiden name was Ebdon, she was never married when she had both of the boys.
She gave up Ivan to her parents to bring up and then when she had my grandfather (Leonard) she had him put into care until he was about 7yrs then took him back again.

There is also this site https://probatesearch.service.gov.uk.

You can generally find someone's death on https://www.freebmd.org.uk (as mentioned by Dea) and then, if you're lucky, you can find their address and date of death. Also who was awarded probate can help with family names.

Bessie Ebdon b 1863 can be found.

Samantha Report 1 May 2019 21:39

Thank you Dea

alviegal
I have used the probate page to find a will for another family member back in 2017 long story, someone keeping secrets from my dad.

Bessie Ebdon is on there you say, I wonder what that's all about????
