I have a copy of a register which reads John Jones bachelor and Elizabeth Thomas spinster both of this parish, were married in this church by banns with consent this 26th day of June 1815 by me John Williams, Minister.

In the presence of Griffith Owen and what looks like Robert Roberts.

The marriage was solemised between us, John Jones and the mark of Elizabeth Thomas.

Where the copy of what I have says Parish- this was not photo copied. From other like pages I have looked at the parish name was up the top of the page which has obviously not been captured in the copy I have.

I have searched every website I can think of and cannot find a record of this marriage, I was looking for the banns really to get some more information, but cant find anything at all. There must have been a marriage because I have the copy of the entry.

It would have been in Wales.

Would you have any suggestions as to where I could look please, I have tried BMD and it's too early, nothing on Ancestry or the Genealogist and have tried to google it, but nothing. Have even tried a worldwide search in case by chance it was not in Wales, but I would be very suprised if it wasn't.

Is there any way, would you know, to view the marriage banns, all I really would like to know is was John Jones a Hatter?

malyon

malyon Report 21 Jun 2019 20:57

if you can find him on the cenus 1841 it might say do you know when he was born and where

Deborah

Deborah Report 21 Jun 2019 21:06

From the 1841 census he was born Llancynfelin, Treddol. Occ. Hatter.

Deborah

Deborah Report 21 Jun 2019 21:11

I should clarify, I know he was a Hatter, just trying to prove that this is his marriage entry. Am sure that it is, just wanting the proof.

Don’t think the old parish records show the occupations

Deborah

Deborah Report 21 Jun 2019 21:39

Ok, thank you Shirley. Is it possible to view the banns anyway just in case it has any more information than I already know.

john is a hatter

Deborah

Deborah Report 21 Jun 2019 21:53

Thank you safc, fortunately a hatter is a rare occupation, which helps. I thought I had all their children but didn't have this one.

Also Jonett is a rare name, I googled it, nothing came up, almost a combination of John and Elizabeth.

Deborah

Deborah Report 21 Jun 2019 22:08

The first of the 11 children I found was an Elizabeth born 1819.

Deborah ...............

those early records usually show no more than the marital status of the groom and bride (ie, Bachelor/Spinster vs Widower/Widow).

It's very unusual to see occupation on the marriage and even rarer to see it on the Banns ............. at least, that is my experience.

It is a bit more common to see the father's occupation on a baptism, but then often the mother's name is omitted!

May I suggest that you take JOnett with a pinch of salt until/unless you can actually see the Parish Register entry for yourself.

JEnett was a relatively common name in those days, and I'm seriously wondering whether the handwriting in the Register is bad or hard to decipher so that every transcriber is seeing the "e" as an "o".

OH has the name in one of his ancestral lines from the 16th to the early 18th centuries, and there are various spelling ...... Jenet/Jenett/Jennet? etc

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 22 Jun 2019 20:22

I may be wrong in my suggestion ................

the name turns up again. I wonder if there is a connection?????

In fact, it turns out to be quite a common spelling in Caernarvonshire at one time

It is very clearly JOnett ........ very clear handwriting!!

John's occupation is shown as Hatter.
