?? this one Personnel files as opposed to Personal and 1887?

Alexander Liddle Anderson
in the Canada, WWI CEF Personnel Files, 1914-1918

Name: Alexander Liddle Anderson
Birth Date: 28 Jul 1887
Birth Place: Linlithgow, Scotland
Mother: Anderson
Regimental Number: 420702

NoK address Mrs Anderson of 169 High Street, Linlithgow
Machinist on enlistment 24.12.1914
Previously served 4 years in 79th C H of C

enlisted 43rd Battalion Canadian Infantry, embarked for service with CEF in France 20.2.1916. Demobbed 12 Aug 1919

War gratuity granted - NoK at this time Mrs L Anderson Wife, 25 Talbot Avenue, Winnipeg

Another form gives NOK as Mrs Anderson 169 High St, Linlithgow, Mother.
This is then crossed through and changed to Wife with initials AL added and address 86 Richardson St, Carlisle, Scotland, dated 2.11.18
EDIT - later form gives address as 86 Richardson St, Denton Holme, Carlisle, Cumb.

He was granted leave to marry 18.10.18 when a Lance Corporal and rated Acting Sergeant 1.3.19

One form grants him a gratuity, part of which is to cover support of child of Dorothy Larkin 17 Berners Road, Wood Green at 5s a week to 12.2.1920. Payments after that to be recovered from Cpl Anderson 472 Tweed Avenue, Elmwood, Winnipeg as Canadian Government has no jurisdiction over solder after that date.

Ah ! Many pages in - Separation allowance to Mrs Jennie Anderson, 169 High Street, Linlithgow, his widowed Mother.

Address to which medals to be sent - 230 Carlton Street, Winnipeg, Manitoba possibly c/o J Hadden

Looks like soon after he arrived in France he had various bouts of appendicitis and bronchitis and was sent back to London March 1917 and then attached to APM Carlisle later that year

Will work my way through the Attestation papers -

You should just read through the notes - The NOK address for Mother at 169 High Street is at enlistment in 1916. It was not altered until post marriage in late 1918 to make NOK his wife, so unless just not changed before that I would expect his Mother to still be at that address at least until the NOK was changed.

The marriage is from freebmd and the names are laid out in the same way as other marriages so Allister L Anderson married Lillian Henderson

Just wondering where 17 Brenner Road Wood Green is pitty it didn't say the sex and how old the child was
Checked and his father did die 1914 so that matches what has been found
It would appear he stayed in Canada

Bearing in mind the address that his NOK was changed to on marriage - I wonder if this is Lilian or at least related as living in Denton Holme

1911 Census For England & Wales

the 1921 Canadian census says Lilian immigrated in 1909 (same as Alexander/Allister) but may not be correct

there is also a Lilian Henderson in Cockermouth.

Sorry I'm getting confused (doesn't take much) Are you saying this Allister is Alexander , and if so the marriage is correct and the Canadian census is correct

greyghost

greyghost Report 5 Sep 2019 17:05

Wood Green is North London. His documents show he was in London March 1917 for approx 6 months

Personally I wouldn't dismiss the two being the same person. Marriage certificate would hopefully verify.

Only other Al* L Anderson born Scotland 1887 +/- 2 years -
Alexander Lorim Anderson 1889 Monifieth
No Allister or variation

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 5 Sep 2019 17:28

Alasdair is Gaelic for Alexander.

The name is also spelled in many Anglicised ways, including Allister as above.

I know his parents they are Robert Anderson And Jane Liddle married 1885 Linlithgow, I wanted to make sure the military records on Ancestry were for Alexander , which is what we have found out but in doing so we found he was paying maintenance for a child .

Can we get a later census 1931? just see if he is still calling himself Allister and if he had children Then I think we-you have helped me as much as you can

CEF http://central.bac-lac.gc.ca/.item/?op=pdf&app=CEF&id=B0140-S015
420702 Enlisted 24/12/1914@Winnipeg MB Discharged 12/8/1919
Served with 43rd bn, 9th Inf Bde, 3rd Can Div
The 3rd div was complete by late March 1916, except for artillery - it borrowed the Indian Lahore Div's arty until mid-July 1916.

I didn't see a Veterans Death Card for him

Canada has a 92 y closure on censuses, so 1931 would be released June 2023.
Then the census has to be digitized, transcribed, indexed, and index matched to image.
That lot took abt 9m for the 1926 prairie census.

1921 http://central.bac-lac.gc.ca/.item/?app=Census1921&op=pdf&id=e002889942
1926 http://central.bac-lac.gc.ca/.item/?app=census1926&op=pdf&id=e011230395

He appears as Alexander for the CEF and 1926.
1926 gives d.o.immig as 1910 for him, 1919 for Lillian - no kids on census.

No hits in 1916 - not surprising - one usually only sees serving military (with a C or an O in col 4) when they're missing from a family

Ancestry has the following, but I have no sub, so I can't check images

All Canadian Passenger Lists, 1865-1935 results
Name Birth Year Arrival Date Arrival Port Departure Port Vessel
Alexander Anderson 1888 1919 St Johns, Newfoundland, Canada Liverpool, England Tunisian
Lillian Anderson 1896 23 Mar 1919 St Johns, Newfoundland, Canada Liverpool, England Tunisian

In 1919, Newfoundland was not part of Canada, but a seperate Dominion/
I would have expected them to travel to Canada, (e.g., Halifax NS or St John NB - Quebec City would not be ice-free in March).
Maybe Newfoundland was unplanned, forced by weather, or mechanical problems,
I don't know abt 1919, but today I'ld have a 900km trip across Nfld, then a 7h ferry ride from Port aux Basques to North Sydney NS, where I presume I'd have rail connections to western Canada.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 7 Sep 2019 10:33

The 1919 travel record posted above by mgnv gives the following details:

The whole page is headed "Returning Canadians".

Alexander Anderson, 31, married, born in Canada.
Destination: c/o GPO, Montreal.
106 [406 ?] Gordon Avenue. [I'm not sure if that's the GPO address or not - I guess it is.]

Lillian Anderson, 23, married,.
Country of [birth ?]: England.
Same destination as Alexander.

Aubridge L, 1, female, single, Scotland.
Same address.

This will be the birth of that child:

ANDERSON
AUTERDIGE LILLI
F
1918
644/21 291
Govan

The column headings are very blurred on the 1919 travel record, and I can't really make them out.
One column has the answer "yes" for Alexander, "no" for Lillian, and is blank for the child. [EDIT: "Have you ever been in Canada before?"]

One column has "yes" for all three. [EDIT: "Do you (something - probably "intend") to permanently (something - probably "reside") in Canada? ]

Two more columns have "yes" for the parents and "no" for the child. [ EDIT: from previous pages I see that those columns are for "Can you read" or "write".]

So it looks like the Alexander Anderson who travelled to Canada in 1919 is not your Alexander Liddle Anderson - especially as it seems he was born in Canada, not Linlithgow..
