Hi .Many thanks. Is there any way of knowing if this John McCarthy is the same person as James McCarthy born 21st July 1902 Askeaton Limerick . His family were told he left Ireland age about 12 and came to England and joined the Army about 1914 but he lied about his age. He was in the 72 Regiment of Foot Soldiers. His Parents were Patrick McCarthy and Mary Walsh.

Later he was in the reserves in WW2 at Ascot

I am looking for information on his WW1 Military Record
Thanks again Pam

sorrry can't see anything
are you sure of the regiment

42nd Regiment of Foot

The 42nd (Royal Highland) Regiment of Foot was a Scottish infantry regiment in the British Army also known as the Black Watch. Originally titled Crawford's Highlanders or the Highland Regiment and numbered 43rd in the line, in 1748, on the disbanding of Oglethorpe's Regiment of Foot, they were renumbered 42nd and in 1751 formally titled the 42nd (Highland) Regiment of Foot. The 42nd Regiment was one of the first three Highland Regiments to fight in North America.[1] [2] In 1881 the regiment was named The Royal Highland Regiment (The Black Watch), being officially redesignated The Black Watch (Royal Highland Regiment) in 1931. In 2006 the Black Watch became part of the Royal Regiment of Scotland.

'19 and a half' in May 1921 would mean born no later than November 1901.

So that can't be the same person.

Pamela

Pamela Report 16 Oct 2019 15:40

We know his exact date of birth is 21st July 1902 Askeaton Limerick Ireland. On his wedding certificate he calls himself James Christopher McCarthy but his birth name is just James. Thanks Pam

As the record you are querying says the man was aged 20 in JANUARY 1922, it can't be someone born in JULY 1902

You mention his marriage - where did that take place?

Where was he living in 1911?

Pamela

Pamela Report 16 Oct 2019 17:41

I was viewing the desertion record in case it was my person, as I was not finding anything. The person I want to find is James McCarthy born 21st July 1902 Askeaton. He is not with his family on the 1911 census. (the census you have included is the correct one for his family. ), but I did find a James McCarthy as a Visitor age 12 with another family John Hewson 54 Edward Hewson 53 Kate Mulvhill 38 Michael Madigan 51 Christy McCarthy age 16 and James McCarthy age 12 Address Tomdeely North, Askeaton Limerick. I am looking for the Military record for James in WW1 He lied about his age when he joined up after coming to England. Thanks Pam

72nd Regiment of Foot appears not to have been in existence by the time of WW1:

https://www.nam.ac.uk/explore/72nd-regiment-foot-duke-albanys-own-highlanders

"In 1881, the regiment was amalgamated with the 78th (Highlanders) Regiment of Foot (The Ross-shire Buffs) to form The Seaforth Highlanders (Ross-shire Buffs, The Duke of Albany's)."

He would have been 8 years old when the 1911 census was taken. Odd that he wasn’t with his family.

Do you actually have his birth certificate?

As previously asked - where did he marry? And when?

Pamela

Pamela Report 16 Oct 2019 19:20

He married Christinj Lewry on 2nd September 1927 in Register Office in Steyning. I have found Christine on 1939 Register in Cuckfield Sussex with one of her sons Marcus McCarthy b 25/6/1927 but James is not on this one. He was called up for service from the reserves at Ascot. Thanks Pam

3.2 Exceptions and anomalies among armed forces personnel

Registration of members of the armed forces was dealt with by the military authorities, so the 1939 Register does not include service personnel in military, naval and air force establishments. Nor does it include members of the armed forces billeted in private homes, including their own homes. However, since conscription did not begin in earnest until January 1940, most people who subsequently served in the armed forces during the Second World War were still civilians in September 1939.

The records do include
members of the armed forces on leave
civilians on military bases
