Don't know how many Robert Briggs Farm Servants there are (seeing 1851) but as below came up...

24 June 1858 - Nottinghamshire Guardian - Nottingham, Nottinghamshire

Police Intelligence
Robert Briggs was charged with absenting himself from the service of Mr. John Richardson, farmer, of Epperstone. The defendant's only excuse was he thought he could do better by parting from his master. He was ordered to pay the expenses 20s 6d, and on promising to return to his master's service and behave better in the future, he was discharged.

1860 Marriage, where he was a Widower, occ. Coal Miner...
(wits. Joseph Clark, Ann Clark (Sister of Charlotte, Marriage 1842)

Chris :)

Edits (have you got that 1856 Marriage Cert., reference posted earlier?, a birth below)

Birth
BRIGGS, ALFRED THOMAS PETTENAR
GRO Reference: 1857 J Quarter in THE NEWARK UNION Volume 07B Page 320

(looks like Death 1857 to match. Burial 24/7/57 Farndon)

Erika, yes that is him. He died in a mining accident I have the report on it from my father in law.

The trouble with leaving research for so long is you forget why you eliminated certain pieces of information. I have found all of the above pieces of information before. I think it's especially hard because Elizabeth was obviously a single mum and Robert didn't live with her. I thought they may have moved to Southwell at one point because in 1841 she is a servant in a house and Robert is a lodger in a house a few streets away.

I don't know how I'll ever know for certain it is them though

Thanks for your help :-)

If this is Robert's burial, his age is a year 'out' compared with his baptism

Name: Robert Briggs
Age: 32
Birth Year: 1833
Burial Date: 17 Aug 1865

Have you considered that the woman on 1841 isn't 'your' Elizabeth Briggs?

Robert isn't with her, so it may be a different woman

I don't understand why his Father is Robert, are you saying he was 'made up'?...

Chris :)

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 20 Nov 2019 20:23

That's fine

Was just checking because the 1841, as you know, doesn't record birthplace info

Julia

Julia Report 20 Nov 2019 20:22

Chris, Charlotte and Robert already had a child when they married so I think that's why they were living in the same address already.

I have the marriage certificate for the Sarah hollis marriage as I thought it could have been the marriage but as you say the father is John Briggs so that doesn't talky either.

This is why I've left it for so many years now! :-D

Where was the Record found, Birth of Robert 1832?...

Chris :)

Julia

Julia Report 20 Nov 2019 20:15

Erika, I know she was born 1801 because my father in law has a prayer book which used to be hers. In it is an inscription for her birth which was 1801. The book was signed by a rev. Dr berdsmore that I found was a past vicar at the church she was born in in 1801. Her mother who I think was Jane Briggs was also born at the church when rev berdsmore was actually a vicar there.

So I'm more or less sure that is her. :-)

Julia

Julia Report 20 Nov 2019 20:09

Yes she is def Roberts mother. It says single mum where I found the record. I started researching this tree quite a few years ago now and had to leave it because I couldn't work Elizabeth out or get any further back. I've just decided to try and pick it up again.

Some one who helped me at the time said that it was most likely that he lied on the marriage certificate since he was born to a single mum.

(says his Father Robert is a Publican, on that 1860 Marriage. Residence for Both, Eyre Street)

Seems a bit confusing!...
