OK - I've looked for it for you. This version is from Ancestry, and is hopelessly inaccurate

1851

Name: John Barley
[John Bailey]
Age: 48
Estimated birth year: abt 1803
Relation: Head
Spouse's name: Harriett Barley
Gender: Male
Where born: Beston, Northamptonshire, England
Civil Parish: Long Lawford
Registration district: Rugby
Sub-registration district: Rugby
ED, institution, or vessel: 10
Household schedule number: 139
Piece: 2069
Folio: 137
Page Number: 29

John Barley 48
Harriett Barley 50
Thomas Barley 14
Rebecca Barley 13
Charles Barley 11
Harriett Barley 7
Luby Barley 1
Eliza Barley 1
Clara Barley 1

If you take the trouble to look at the image, you will see that 'Harriett' is a mistranscription of Charlotte. As Luby is of Jabez

In fact, you don't even need to look at the image - someone has submitted a correction, which appears on the transcription

Show us some EVIDENCE of a John and Harriet together on censuses. Don’t just refer to them. C&P the transcriptions

I don't understand where you have seen John with a wife called Harriet.

He's with Charlotte in every census and you've been given the marriage reference and also John and Charlotte's deaths.

Their son Charles Wesley Bailey was married to a Harriet.

Sorry to revive this post but I've been told off a few times for creating new posts although i'm going to be a bit stuck if nobody sees this update.

I'm wondering what the best way is of proving or disproving that John Bailey married twice and that both Harriet and Charlotte were his wives. The reason I say this is that:

a) The John Bailey on both census entries was born in 1803;

b) The John Baileuy on both census entries was from Preston Capes (inaccurately recorded as "Beston" Northamptonshire (Should have been Preston as it was often abbreviated).

c) Quite a few Baileys are a bit lost about where they fit in - i've pursued all lines and I understand the history of every one of them on this side from the Hardiman (or Hardman????) marriage and they are stuck despite going back a long way in Coventry and Warwickshire.

I'm not even sure where to start with answering this question myself, perhaps because i'm asking for the impossible? It would make a lot of sense if there were kids from both marriages - however - one concession - there were births between John and Charlotte overlapping births with John and Harriet.

I guess without there being 2 marriage certificates (although these don't contain the exact date of birth do they) that it is impossible to work out?

Maybe I'm being a nana and not thinking about this right but i'd like to help a fair few people by getting to the bottom of this.

Thanks!

Why do you say his wife’s name was Harriet?

It wasn’t if the censuses are accurate

KathleenBell

Perhaps they never actually married.
