Judging by this was Betsey married twice?

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 22 Feb 2020 20:59

Well, she certainly was married to John Blight, who died in 1839.
I can't see a marriage to John Arnold, but she was at least his partner from the early 1840's onwards.

ArgyllGran Report 22 Feb 2020 21:30

There's this marriage of a Betsey Blight - but unless John has been given the wrong surname by mistake on the parish record, it's not her. Or some names haven't been transcribed , which I think is possible:

Betsey Blight
in the England & Wales, Civil Registration Marriage Index, 1837-1915
Name: Betsey Blight
Registration Year: 1843
Registration Quarter: Oct-Nov-Dec
Registration district: Bideford
Inferred County: Devon
Volume: 10
Page: 104
Records on Page:
Name
Betsey Blight
Elizabeth Brannan
Harriett Brinsmead
John Sapley Cole
John Tapley Cole
Mary Ann Hopper
James Jewell
John Jury
Robert Squire

In fact, I think there may be more than just (maybe) John Arnold's name missing.

From later records:

Elizabeth Brannan married John Tapley Cole.
Harriet Brinsmead married Robert Squire.
James Jewell seems to have married a Frances/Fanny Cole (that's from censuses and children's births )

So, Frances Cole and (maybe) John Arnold seem to be missing from the list, and I don't know who Betsey Blight, Mary Ann Hopper, or John Jury married.

??
Am looking at this as the 1841 census shows John with a daughter Jane born c 1837. They are in Monkleigh where Jane is said to be born.

So presumably before John and Betsy got together as Betsy also on her own with her children. in 1841

A 20 year old John Hookaway is also at Salter's Cottages

John is an Ag, Lab. here, so either not the same man or he changed occupation before the 1851 census

The daughter Jane would match the daughter Jane in 1851 census - and was clearly born before John and Betsey got together.

Baptism of the daughter Eliza:

Eliza Arnold
England Births and Christenings, 1538-1975

Christening Date: 05 Feb 1832
Christening Date (Original): 05 FEB 1832
Christening Place: MONKLEIGH,DEVON,ENGLAND
Father's Name: John Arnold
Mother's Name: Ann

Here's the name John Jury/Jewry cropping up again - could this be the baptism of the daughter Ann? Did John change his name at some point?

Re Jewry/Jury and Arnold question:

there are pages and pages ( 10) about this family (although some of it seems to be from trees, therefore suspect) here:

https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=496394.0

A couple of snippets from that thread:

"The second 9 mystery us that John Arnold barge man married Mary Blight nee Hookway f Samuel HOOKWAY a bargeman giving his father as John Arnold a bargeman John Arnold formally John Jury
We have found John Jury baptised in Ashreigney in 1801 to Hannah Jury single woman.
Did Hannah marry an Arnold or was his biological father John Arnold was he brought up by a John Arnold or what? More to the point how do I find evidence of any of the above "

"A fellow researcher G has contacted me asking about John Arnold basically because he can't understand the name change anyway John Arnold married twice 1 Jane BLIGHT and 2betsey BLIGHT daughter of Samuel Hookway
Their marriage is registered Dec qtr 1843 as John JURY his baptism name G has the certificate which says his father was John Arnold a bargeman after that they appear on censuses as ARNOLD 1851 HO107/1895 fo355 p3 I'll ask G for a copy of the certificate
G is the grandson of William on this census"

And a tree for John Arnold - though how correct it is goodness knows.

Goodness AG, that all looks very complicated !!

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 23 Feb 2020 20:07

Yes, very!
I can't see the records mentioned in those bits above - baptism for John Jury in 1801 with mother Hannah, nor a marriage to Jane Blight. (Tried Ancestry and FS)
