as divorce was expensive in those days

Oh yes, I've got it now.

It's definitely her.
born July 12th 1871.
Parents : John Paul, "Killed in America by accident" 1881; and Ann O'Donnell, died Belfast 1878.

Sister: Margaret Dennison Paul, born 20 Dec 1872, now by marriage Margaret Dennison Oakes, Applegarth, Ayr, North Queensland, Australia.

Sister: Eva Paul, born 24th Dec 1874, died 1882.
Sister: Ann Elizabeth Paul, died in infancy.

None of the sisters had any children - although that's not true - see birth of Margaret's daughter Fidelis below..

But why would her mother's death be registered in her maiden name?

John Paul's death is just mentioned in the words I copied, on page 737 of the link safc posted.

Her mother's death won't be registered in her maiden name - it's just mentioned as such on page 737 as above.
