Official adoptions didn’t start until legislation was passed in 1926.

So just to continue on from this and after a break from my tree, Is there a way to find any official records of adoption. Annie Tilly was a Carter from her mothers name, and was adopted by the Burfoots when she was approx 7 I have now been informed.

Thanks you for all your help it is very much appreciated the pair of you!

As Annie was born at the Burfoot home, and brought up by them, I wonder if the middle name Tilley is in honour of Matilda Fanny?

Matilda is often shortened to Tilly or Tillie. Maybe Tilley is another version.

Unfortunately, I don't think you'll ever find out more about her mother. There were large numbers of Florence Carters working as servants in London 1891 and 1901.

ArgyllGran Report 12 Jul 2020 09:25

The Burfoot/Leatham marriage, and all the censuses are already on the other thread.
There's no point in repeating them all here.

Alfred's not with the family in 1891 either.

On the other thread I suggested that it was because he was a butler (as stated on Annie's marriage banns), and that therefore he would be living-in at his places of work.

He would still be listed at the family address on ERs because he would be the official tenant.

He's on censuses as George Burfoot, butler at posh London addresses (censuses on the other thread).

In 1891 he's in Eaton Square.
In 1911 he's in Chester Square.
I haven't found him in 1901.

In 1881 he's a footman at Fetteresso Castle:

George Barfoot
in the 1881 Scotland Census
Name: George Barfoot
Age: 25
Estimated birth year: abt 1856

Interesting -

Annie was born at the Barfoot's house:

Alfred George Barfott
in the London, England, Electoral Registers, 1832-1965
Name: Alfred George Barfott
Electoral Date: 1898
Street address: 29, College street , Putney
Ward or Division/Constituency: Whitechapel
County or Borough: Tower Hamlets, England

That's also the Burfoots' address in 1901, on the census.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 11 Jul 2020 23:29

If she stayed in London after Annie's birth, and IF she married, there are a few possibilities:

Florence Emily Carter
in the England & Wales, Civil Registration Marriage Index, 1837-1915

I'm not sure which man married that Florence in 1907.

And there are other possible marriages.

There are lots of Florence Carters working as servants in London in 1891 and 1901 censuses. And other years, too, of course, but those would be the ones where you'd have most chance of finding your particular Florence.

TonyLeach

TonyLeach Report 11 Jul 2020 23:20

Florence Emily Carter I think it says a servant and in brackets domestic, 29 College Street Putney

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 11 Jul 2020 23:18

No, as I said above, the census with Charles and Florence is nothing to do with it.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 11 Jul 2020 23:17

You'll probably never know who her father was, as he's not named on the birth cert.

There are several Florence Emily Carters - she wasn't necessarily from London.
What address is given on the birth cert?
Are there any other details about Florence?

TonyLeach

TonyLeach Report 11 Jul 2020 23:16

So if Tilley is her middle name on th 1901 census the info on the annie, florence and charles are not the right family?

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 11 Jul 2020 23:11

Tilley is her middle name, not her surname.

There's not necessarily any Tilley family involved.

The 1901 census with Charles and Florence Tilley with their daughter Annie is nothing to do with your family.

She was born as Annie Tilley Carter, then presumably adopted by the Burfoots, and took their name, so she married as Burfoot.

TonyLeach

TonyLeach Report 11 Jul 2020 23:06

So would Annie Tilley Carter be know as Annie Tilley do you think? Is this where I am getting confused and Annie Tilley Burfoot ? The information about Clare Cottage Dartford is correct that was where my mother was born.
