Thank you all for your help yesterday. This is a very puzzling one. Very weird that we can find no trace of the marriage of Margaret and George. Even stranger no birth of Peter Brennen who we know married lived and died in Ryde Isle of Wight.
I will keep trying but told my friend it looks a bit of an impossible case. Very disappointing hate being beaten.
Thank you all again

Hi Erika

How did you find that DOB for Peter?

ErikaH Report 18 Jul 2020 15:05

That's his death - not his birth

However, there is a 'closed' record on the 1939 register, which wasn't pointed out when the info was posted, which could be him.

Alana -

Peter's death registration (2015) on the GRO website, which Erika posted, shows his YOB as 1938.

But, as everyone has found, there's no sign of a birth record.

rootgatherer Report 19 Jul 2020 18:11

This may be a bit far fetched but it's my gut feeling anyway.

I posted a possible birth for Margaret in Downpatrick. Her mother's maiden name was McComb.

I also posted a marriage for that Margaret so IF she is your lady, she wasn't free to marry George so it is possible that her children with George were registered in her maiden surname using her mother's maiden surname as her own for the sake of appearances. I think the birth below is possibly your Peter. The two below that may be the other two that you were unsure about but with mmn mis recorded.

name(s) Mother District Vol Page
Births Mar 1939 (>99%)
Neill Peter McComb I.Wight 2b 898
Births Mar 1940 (>99%)
NEILL Robin McComt I. Wight 2b 1647
Births Jun 1943 (>99%)
Neill Maureen McCourt I.Wight 2b 906

There is a record on findagrave of the first husband of Margaret Neill but with a different mother for his children so he may have remarried, but n Ireland after Margaret's death.

Opinions please on this theory from some of the other helpers.

It looks like a good possibility, RG.

There's no Neill/McComb marriage in England/Wales/Scotland to account for them.

Alana -
you'd have to buy the birth cert of at least Peter, to be sure if it's the right one or not.

Peter's wife is on the 2020 ER. Will send address by PM

Thanks again rootgatherer and argyllgran for the work you have done. My friend has an address for her Aunt Maureen wife of her deceased maternal uncle Peter. So she is going to write to her asking her if she has any knowledge on his mother and father.
Fingers crossed she can help. If not like you say we will have to send for certificates to eliminate the possibilities. Nothing is easy but the challenge is addictive for us lovers of family research.
Keep well

It may be worth buying Margaret and George's death certificates to see who the informant is.

Does your friend have Doris's birth certificate? Not sure about English certificates but in Scotland it would give all the names the mother had been known by.

I do think the Margaret born in Downpatrick is your Margaret and she was unable to marry George because she was married to James Gabbey.

Please let us know how your friend gets on.

Thanks Rootgatherer

I will discuss all you have told me in the morning, she will be pleased hear your theory. She has always thought maybe they werent married as there were never any photos. My friend remembers her grandfather George Brennen passing away as it was a few months after her mother Doris Anne Glen passed, and she recalls that it was probably her Uncle Peter who registered his death. Margarets death registration would need the certificate. I dont think she has a birth certificate for her mother Doris.

Will keep you informed. Thanks again for your help may need your help again.
