William Thomas Potter- Canada

ProfilePosted byOptionsPost Date

Deborah Report 1 Aug 2020 11:16

I am looking into my 1st cousin twice removed. William Thomas Potter, born 11 Jan 1908 at 11 Farm Road, Pontlottyn, Wales.

The family story is that he moved to Canada or USA, it is more likely that he settled in Canada, but may have travelled via the USA, we don't know when or with whom.

My last sighting of him is on the 1911 census of 30 Fenwick Street, Pontygwaith. aged 3, with his parents, Samuel and Edith, and 2 siblings, Samuel 5 and Horace 1.

Is there any way to find find out more about when and where he went, and what happened to him, for example, did he get married and have children, there are a lot of possible records on Ancestry but not enough detail to be sure if it is the correct one. I have also tried Google, but again nothing specific as to where to start.

I know there must have been documents and paperwork regarding his emigration, could you please just give me some pointers as to where to start looking.

Thank you ErikaH I will, and greyghost, you may have found it, his Mum, lived at Lady Tyler Terrace many years later.

Thank you so very much.

I have just noticed that image is also in my tree on Ancestry which must have got picked up when I took some information from one of my cousins tree's, I hadn't noticed the address Lady Tyler Terrace this morning, which would certainly point to this being the right person, there is another sailing the following year which may be him coming back from the USA with the description Farmer, he maybe went out there for work on a farm, but I now have a starting point, I will look at Family Search, and thank you again.

The one who came to UK in December 1928 (NB) was going to Thatched Cottage, Gipsy Lane, Northampton

Yes, saw that ErikaH, what drew my attention to it was that about half of our Welsh family went to Coventry, not that far from Northampton, I know its a shot in the dark, there are a lot of us trying to track his movements, I would dearly love to piece his life together.

Kay????

Kay???? Report 1 Aug 2020 13:38

Hello. I am trying to find out what happened to my uncle, William Potter,(William T Potter). He emigrated to Canada in 1928.
Ship EMPRESS OF FRANCE. Departed Southampton 15th August 1928 and destined for Quebec. He was the second son of Edith and Samuel Potter. He was born in Pontlottyn South Wales UK in 1908. At the time of departure he was living in Lady Tyler Terrace, Monmouth, South Wales. His occupation was a miner. He had a relative living in Canada at the time. His name was Charles Hippard.
It would be great if I could find out what happened to him and hopefully find some relatives.

This is posted on Friday 28 June ----------..a relative/ ?

Have had another look and I cant see this post for 28th June. (assuming its 2020) I would say it is definitely a relative going by the detail given, if the poster is looking for relatives then they have found one!! and there are plenty more of us still around.

Hi Mary, thank you for all that.

Am still trying to find the post mentioned by Kay at 13.38, it looks like they are looking for living relatives as well as ancestors.

There's this thread, started by someone called Avril Harper:

https://www.genesreunited.co.uk/boards/board/ancestors/thread/1338789

Avril also had these threads on Rootschat:

https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=531345.0

That last one (651983) is the one mentioned by Kay - dating from 2013.

Ok AG, thank you, I know who Avril is, would like to know who the other one was though, I went back quite a few years on GR. The only Friday 28th June I could see on Google was 2019, and it wasn't that one, but I did only have a quick look for the minute. Its always nice to find a living relative.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 1 Aug 2020 15:41

The "other one" was also Avril.
As I said, the thread mentioned by Kay was the last Rootschat link I posted above, dated 28th June 2013.
Not a GR thread.

Sorry AG, I didn't see you posted "2013" my oversight.
