greyghost

greyghost Report 10 Oct 2020 17:32

This one? Born c 1834 Aberystruth, Abergavenny, Monmouthshire

Named as Algernon "Isaac" Gordon Prosser on some trees, just Isaac on others.

Died 1.8.1872 at Yarmouth, Nova Scotia

There are 31 trees, none appear to have more than I've posted about his death

He's on 33 trees on Ancestry, and most give his name as Algernon "Isaac" Gordon Prosser, born 1834 in Abergavenny.

Most say he died 1 Aug 1872 in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia.

One gives a link to an obituary, but I can't open it.
None of them give documentary proof.

I can't see a death record on Ancestry .

In 1871 he was living in Yarmouth, so it seems reasonable to assume that he died there:

Thank you

My problem is my ancestor Harriet Ballard married Isaac Prosser in 1854 (no other names on the certificate). Isaac was an iron moulder father Roger a carpenter.

I have never found Isaac on any census with Harriet but she always says she is married until her death certificate which says ‘widow of’ in 1898

The Prossers seem to be a bit of a complicated family

I hadn’t actually found that Harriet Jane being more interested in Harriet & Isaac’s daughter Emma b 1859 in Abergavenny where Harriet lived for the rest of her life.

So thank you for that one.

I suspect the Isaac Gordon in Novia Scotia May be a red herring as who are Anna Maria & emmeline? As far as I know he did not have any sisters of that name but will look further into that.

Thank you . I have Harriet in Abergavenny up until her death plus her marriage and death Certificates and Emma’s birth & marriage certificate. I have Emma who married Thomas Morgan Watkins up to her death.

I have swapped from my desktop to my iPad at the moment (G&T time downstairs!) so have not got all my information to hand but I think I have albert’s birth certificate as well.

Dissed Julia is interesting as that is another I have not seen before. I have only just gone back to the Prosser family research in the last week or so (Lancashire tight lockdown!)

lancashireAnn

lancashireAnn Report 10 Oct 2020 19:15

On harriet’s marriage certificate Isaac was living in ?Trowbridge which is in Melksham registrations district so that Harriet jane birth seems even more likely

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 10 Oct 2020 19:22

Emma's is the last Prosser/Ballard birth, so presumably Isaac departed for Canada some time between the summer of 1858 and January 1863.

Probably before the 1861 census, as I don't see him anywhere in England/Wales then.

lancashireAnn

lancashireAnn Report 10 Oct 2020 19:37

I did wonder if Isaac and Harriet divorced and Harriet just went back to Abergavenny and pretended to be a widow.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 10 Oct 2020 19:45

More likely in those days, they didn't divorce, as it was expensive and difficult, but only separated.

I agree Harriet probably said she was a widow for respectability.
Probably she didn't know if Isaac was alive or dead once he'd gone off to Canada - if she even knew where he'd gone.

Harriet was born in Wiltshire, so she she didn't "go back" to Abergavenny..
Perhaps they had moved to Abergavenny before Isaac left (in fact, before Emma was born), and then she just stayed there, near her in-laws.

lancashireAnn

lancashireAnn Report 10 Oct 2020 20:49

Yes - ‘go back’ was the wrong phrase. Blame my slip on the fact that my father’s family came from the Abergavenny area for generations

Emma’s in-laws were slightly different. Her father in law was from an Abergavenny area family but her mother in law in all census returns (Except 1) said she was from Bermondsey which strangely I found this afternoon at least 2 of isaac’s brothers went to and married. I have never found her in-laws marriage in spite of trying one or two certificates.
