I'm hooked, so used a few more credits and had a look at the birth cert for Henry, one of the McGunnigle children in 1911.

It looks as if the James McGonigle who is at the same address as the Kennas in 1921-23 (116 Drygate Street) , with Mrs Annie McGonigle, could be the James from 1911 census.

Henry McGunnigle.
Born 14th Sept 1907, at 6am, at 50 Provanhill Street, Glasgow.
Father: James McGunnigle, bottle blower, journeyman.
Mother: Annie McGunnigle, ms Crumlish.
Parents' marriage: 31 Dec 1901 in Glasgow.

Marriage:

CRUMLISH ANNIE
MCGUNNIGLE JAMES
1902
644/6 38
St Rollox

But I'm not hooked enough to look at the marriage cert to see if James is Catherine Ferns's son!

ArgyllGran Report 26 Jun 2021 16:20

Her mother's death:

DEVLIN [ also listed as McGUNNIGLE and as FERNS - so that's the right family above ]
CATHERINE
49
1916
644/5 359
Garngadhill

I don't see James McGunnigle's death.

ArgyllGran Report 26 Jun 2021 16:10

Hmmm -
well, the glassblower in 1911 obviously isn't her father.

Her mother's remarriage:

MCGUNNIGLE CATHERINE
DEVLIN JOHN

Catherine's parents were James and Catherine, per her marriage cert.
What was Catherine's father's occupation on the marriage cert?
Does it say if he was deceased or not?

I'm wondering about this family - although Katie/Catherine's age is a couple of years out from that stated in 1911, and the age of the glassblower brother James is wildly different .

Katie McGunnigle

I've had look at Catherine's birth cert -

Born June 5th 1890 at 45 Middleton Place.
Father: James McGunnigal, journeyman bottle blower <<<<<<<<<<<<<<
Mother: Catherine McGunnigal, ms Ferns
Parents' marriage: Dec 24th 1884, Glasgow.

Death of another sibling:

MCGUNNIGAL MARY

James in 1911 can't be Catherine's father unless his age is wrong - if aged 40 in 1911, he would have been 14 when he married.

Either James is Father to Catherine and the children are her brothers or
James is brother in law to Andrew and the children are perhaps his.

Do you have the full census you can post? Presume you have it if you can mention the relationships given

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 25 Jun 2021 19:14

That will be another 6 credits to see the 1911 census.

Personally, I would opt first for the marriage cert, which will give the names of both parents, including mother's maiden name, and father's occupation..
Then perhaps the census as back-up, if her birth can't be traced from the parents' names
