Another factor was the pronunciation - dialects were much stronger than is the case nowadays.

There was no standardisation of spelling in those days.

Names were spelled in whatever way the clerk thought it should be spelled, and therefore can vary from one document to another..

Most people were illiterate and wouldn't have any idea of how to spell their names in any case.

Hi. I have revisited the suggestion by Kayak that my George Edward Fauxcroft Wade and his father Edward Fauxcroft Wade may have a connection with Edward Foxcroft and wife Elizabeth who had a son George Edward Foxcroft.

I noticed that date of birth given for George E Foxcroft is 23/4/1829. I then checked hand written notes past down from my grandfather who original put together the tree as I now have it and he writes that the date of birth of George Edward Fauxcroft Wade is 23/4/1830. Though exactly 1 year out I have the thought that the Edward Foxcroft and George Edward Foxcroft mentioned by Kayak are indeed my EF Wade and GEFWade.

Either the surname Wade was added after the christening or it was omitted at some point prior..

Have tried to disprove my own theory but cannot find any evidence to negate the idea. Also it doesn't explain how Foxcroft became Fauxcroft, though I have seen reference to Faxcroft which is only a stroke away from Foxcroft.

I need some help with this please. Thank you.

Just to confirm that George did enlist in the 11th Foot, as he is with them on the 1851, British Army worldwide index.

It's a shame there are no enlistment papers etc for him; it would have been interesting to see how his signature compared with that of the witness George Wade on the 8th May 1848 marriage of Mary Ann Wade as previously posted.

That signature does differ, certainly on the 'Wade' part, from the signature of George Wade who married Elizabeth Smith on 28th Nov 1859.

However if 1848 George was George Edward Fauxcroft Wade, he was still in his teens, and his signature may have developed as he matured in the following years.

Any signatures on his police records would naturally more likely to be akin to that on his 1859 marriage.

Posting just in case relevant - though it's a common name:

George Wade
in the UK, Apprentices Indentured in Merchant Navy, 1824-1910
Name: George Wade
Age: 16
Birth Year: abt 1829
Registration or Indenture Date: 23 Apr 1845 (mistranscription - see below)
Vessel: Moor

On image -
Date of indenture: 6/7/1842.
Date of enrolment of indenture: 28/4/1845
Term: 5 years.
Name of party to whom bound: T Symons.
Indenture expires 6/7/1847

In the "Remarks " column it says Colchester, but I don't know what that signifies - whether that boy was born there, or had registered there, or T Symons was based there, or what.

Expiry of indenture in 1847 would allow for enlisting in the 11th Reg. in 1848.

Colin Report 2 Aug 2021 16:43

Reference the discharge info for George mentioned above, are there records of ' Sea Service' and does anyone know where this might have taken place. Not sure how this would fit in with his sailing to Australia on enlisting with the 11th Reg of Footjust 4 years later. Thanks

Re this entry

London, England, Workhouse Admission and Discharge Records, 1764-1930

Name: George Wade

Below George Wade on the image, is Mary Ann Wade aged 15. He is from Newington, can't make out her abode, I think it's St Mary New. London.

This record below is a different register. It has Mary Ann aged 15, being admitted on Jan 24th from St Mary Newington as destitute. Further up the page a George Wade was admitted on 23rd Jan from Newington , aged 14, no employment.

Name: Mary Ann Wade

Following on from AG's last post, there is a WADE connection with 4, Poplar Row Newington, in 1861.

Namely Mary Ann Wilcock/Wilcox, nee WADE, father AMOS WADE, a deceased upholsterer, her birthplace is recorded as Marylebone.

In 1861 Mary Ann is living at 4, Poplar Row Newington, with her husband and family (mistranscribed Wilcork)

1861 England, Wales & Scotland Census

4, Poplar Row, Newington, London & Surrey, England

Edward Wilcork Head Married Male 32 1829 Tailor Southwark, Surrey, England (EDWIN on the image)
****Mary Ann Wilcork Wife Married Female 30 1831 - Marylebone, Middlesex, England****
Emily Wilcork Daughter - Female 13 1848 Scholar Southwark, Surrey, England
Alice Wilcork Daughter- Female 7 1854 Scholar Southwark, Surrey, England
George Wilcork Son- Male 5 1856 Scholar Southwark, Surrey, England
Amelia Wilcork Daughter - Female 2 1859 Scholar Southwark, Surrey, England
Emelia Wilcork Daughter - Female 0 1861 - Southwark, Surrey, England

There is this marriage for Mary Ann and Edwin in 1846:

Name: Mary Ann Wade
Gender: Female
Record Type: Marriage
Marriage Date: 8 May 1848
Marriage Place: St Mary, Lambeth, Lambeth, England
Father:
Amos Wade
Spouse:
Edwin Wilcox
Register Type: Parish Register

Mary Ann's father is deceased, Amos Wade, an upholsterer. Edwin is a Tailor, as per the 1861 census, and his father is Thomas Wilcox, a tailor.

The witnesses are GEORGE WADE, and ?? Gawler? (illeg)

Mary Ann's age is a bit iffy. She is 'of full age' ie over 21 in 1848, so born before 1827, but aged 30 in 1861, so born c1830. Birthplace, as said before, Marylebone.

No idea what relation Mary Ann is to George Edward Fauxcroft Wade, possibly sister, given birthplace and period, (EDIT but father not named Edward) but could be a more distant connection.

EDIT Have looked at her Wilcox census records 1851,71, 81, and unfortunately there is no sign of Mary Ann's mother staying with the Wilcox family.

I don't know London districts well, but Google says New Kent Road is in Southwark
But one site says Poplar Row, New Kent Road is now called Tarn Road, in Newington.

But, wherever it was, I don't see it on the London ER for c1861.
Nor either George or Elizabeth Wade in the east of London - not as Wade, Fauxcroft, or Foxcroft..

The 1829 baptism of George Edward Foxcroft posted above (if that's him, which seems quite likely) says his mother's name was Elizabeth.
