Stanley Smith - Missing from Records

ProfilePosted byOptionsPost Date

Adam

Adam Report 25 Aug 2021 12:06

Stanley Smith of 10 Back Street Luton was sentenced to 5 years at reform school in 1905. According to newspapers, he would have to go to a workhouse until a suitable place could be found for him.
From this point on, I cannot find a record of him.

1911 Census, his mother has listed 3 dead children of which Stanley could be one (I have found 2) but cannot find a record to prove this.

He was born William Stanley Nightingale in 1894, in Northants.

Just wondering if anyone has any ideas?

For INFO

Name: William Stanley Nightingale
Age: 0
Baptism Date: 16 Nov 1894
Baptism Place: Towcester, Northamptonshire, England
Parish as it Appears: Towcester
Register Type: Parish Registers
Mother: Mary Ann Nightingale

Presumably, the mother married Smith at some stage after the child's birth?
If not, what prompted the boy's surname change?

Thanks for posting the link to the earlier thread, ErikaH.

I though this sounded familiar, and no wonder, as I've already posted the court reports on the other thread.

Much of what's on this thread has already been found for you, Adam.
You should have continued on the older thread, which would have avoided duplication of research.

Thanks all - sorry to cause confusion, I thought it might have been clearer to have a new thread as the original was about his parentage, and this one is about what happened to him after 1905.

With regards the cheque theft, that is actually a different boy.
The spectacles and socks are 'my' Stanley.

I do appreciate everyone's help, it's great that you're all able to pitch in so well.

Particularly good find with the workhouse record!
