I have decided to put the roll of honour details in his record and also the cwgc certificate with a note that this could be our man. I have been unable to find anything else so I will have to give up with him.

Thank you all so very much for your input and your time and effort are very much appreciated. Thanks for you patience to when I got his name wrong first off.

The records on forces-war-records.co.uk possibly confirm that T Hughes was named Thomas:

Thomas Hughes 2615688 Private 1943 Parachute Regiment, Aac
T Hughes 2615688 Private 1943 Army Air Corps

There's a photo of him here:

ArgyllGran Report 23 Sep 2021 15:32

If Thomas was already in the forces in 1939, he won't appear on the 1939 Register.

You may never find any online reference to Biggleswade.
It may have been mentioned in his army record - but that's not online.

Erica the mention of Durham is on Thomas Hughes' army record .

I need to try and find a link to him in Biggleswade although where it says Bedford on the record could mean the district of Bedford which we do come under.

I am late replying as I had to go out so thanks to everyone who has added posts

Oh bother it is a T, I have just looked at a photo I took at the actual memorial and you are right. I have had a rotten day and misread my notes. Back to the drawing board

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 22 Sep 2021 22:12

You said "the only information on CWGC is Private".

I can't see him on the CWGC site.

The only J Hughes (with just the initial) was in the RAF Volunteer Reserve, and his parents lived in Londonderry.

I can't find any WW2 private named Hughes, with any first name.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 22 Sep 2021 21:57

Is the transcription wrong?
It says T Hughes in the transcription.

https://www.roll-of-honour.com/Bedfordshire/BiggleswadeRollofHonour.html

It's hard to tell from the photo if it's T or J:

LaGooner Report 22 Sep 2021 21:37

The newspaper said his parents were in Farnworth and that the hospital was impressed that at 18 years old he travelled all the way to Biggleswade to apply for the position of porter. A few bits are starting to come together and match up.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 22 Sep 2021 21:32

??? Maybe, assuming he was born in Farnworth, and not just that he had lived there at some time:

Marriages Sep 1919 (>99%)
Hughes John H Jubb Bolton 8c 995

Jack is not with his parents in 1939:

??? If this is the same man, he's not the one on the Biggleswade memorial.
