As the man was in a mental hospital in 1939, I would think it unlikely that he served after that, although it isn't impossible, of course.

Thank you for hospital information, it sounds awful Maddie, my mom said she'd met Charlie once when he came to visit his sister - moms mother-in-law- and he seemed such a nice gentle man but not really 'with it' , My dads cousin wrote telling me Charlie had really suffered through his time in the army (as she thought he was in the army) and after having electric shock treatment he " was never the same again". So very sad.

just for info hosp in 1939

The hospital became Chelsham Mental Hospital in 1923.[1] It was a pioneering centre for psychosurgery. Surgeon John Crumbie designed his own leucotome (instrument for cutting the white matter in the brain) which was constructed by Warlingham's assistant clerk of works, and referred to by Wylie McKissock, who operated with a Cushing brain needle, as a "mechanical egg-whisk".[3] If the patients resisted the surgery they were given electroconvulsive shocks before being anaesthetised.[4] It also had a specialist unit to treat patients suffering from alcohol and drug dependency.[2]

The facility went on to become Warlingham Park Hospital in 1937 and joined the National Health Service in 1948.[2] After the introduction of Care in the Community in 1983, the hospital went into a period of decline and eventually closed in 1999.[2]

The archives were deposited with the Bethlem Royal Hospital which subsequently became the primary provider of mental health care to residents of Croydon.[2] Although the Grade II listed water tower was retained,[5] the remainder of the buildings were demolished to make way for an up-market housing estate known as Greatpark.[6]

Oh RAF, thank you for this as I said I knew nothing other than being told he was probably in the army and was shell shocked - so thats interesting to find out - my fathers cousin has since passed away and there are no other relatives I can ask. Thank you

According to both the hospital record and his enlistment, Charles R was in the RAF -
signing-on on 10th January 1923, giving his DoB as 2/6/03 - actual DoB 2/6/04

Next of Kin was his MOTHER, 47 Auckland Terrace, Kingston on Thames.

yes she was down as widowed when she married Percy Wicks

Lynnedee

Lynnedee Report 12 Jan 2022 16:53

I did think Martha and Harry were the husband and wife of the household but not sure why my gt gran would be listed as Wife - presumably because her husband was about somewhere and therefore she wasnt a widow, we were told Charles P 'disappeared' and Gt Gran did 'moonlight flits' so family never knew what happened to Charles P. I think I came across a death for a Charles around 1926 but I'm not sure and must admit I haven't checked that in the last couple of days that ive started researching family again. Both grandmothers in my family were Baker and not sure if the death for Charles that i found death was on paternal side or maternal side so Id have to re-check

Was Marie said to be a widow when she married Wicks?

ArgyllGran

So presumably - but not necessarily - Charles Philip was still alive in 1914-15.

So the statement on the daughter’s marriage cert is probably accurate.

Have you looked for a death?

Martha Davies is Harry’s wife, surely ;-) ;-)

Lynnedee Report 12 Jan 2022 16:37

I know Charlie Roeloff did suffer terribly from shell shock and an elderly cousin of my father told me he had electric shock therapy, and was very badly affected for the rest of his life apparently. I didnt know where he was a patient so thank you,

The details I posted were for the helpers' reference.

It's easier to understand details and possible connections when we can see the actual records.

No sorry ErikaH I was replying to ArgyllGran and then meant to delete but pressed wrongly. Sorry for causing confusion. I know Marie married Charles and in 1929 married Percy Wicks but know nothing about a marriage to Harry Davies unless this was for respectability purposes I dont know!?!
