I think we're talking about two different Charleses.

The father of the man who married Annie was an engineer in 1897.
The 1897 marriage cert doesn't say he was deceased - though of course that doesn't mean he wasn't.

The father of the man who married Marian was a cheesemonger in 1866 and 1871.
In 1881 he was a grocer's carman.
His wife Catherine was a widow by 1911, living with her sister Mary Cooper.
In 1901 she may be listed as Ellen Cooper, widow, born "Surrey Borough", a visitor to the Meinert family in Bermondsey.
I can't see her in 1891.

Possible death of Edward??

Edward Towgood
in the England & Wales, Civil Registration Death Index, 1837-1915
Name: Edward Towgood
Age: 48
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1834
Registration Quarter: Jan-Feb-Mar
Death Registration Place: Kensington, London, United Kingdom
Death Date: Mar 1882
Inferred Death Place: London, United Kingdom
Volume: 1a
Page: 61

Edward Towgood
in the Web: UK, Burial and Cremation Index, 1576-2014
Name: Edward Towgood
Register Type: Burial
Death Date: abt 1882
Burial or Cremation Date: 1882
Burial or Cremation Place: Kensington and Chelsea, London, England

If that's the case, then he can't have been an engineer in 1897 - unless Charles lied and promoted his father from carman to engineer.

ADDED:
Re the possible 1882 death of Edward -
on Charles's 1886 marriage cert Edward is a carman - and not said to be deceased, though of course that doesn't mean anything one way or the other.

The man who married in 1897 claimed to be a bachelor.....................

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 23 Dec 2022 12:24

Yes, thanks for useful reminder, ErikaH .

Of course he could have been lying there too.
But I feel pretty sure he's a different man.

ErikaH Report 23 Dec 2022 12:27

The only possible 'link' is his being a Dock Labourer on all censuses after the 1886 marriage and on the Workhouse records

All somewhat 'iffy'.....................

It would be helpful to hear from Craig how he worked back to this man............

EDITED

The Probate address is the same the 1921 census.................

I suppose their father must have felt unable to cope with three young children after their mother Marian's death.

Hi all again these messages from me are a bit screwed up.
I had the Canadian information and all i needed was the link from Charles Towgood 1866-1931 to Edward Towgood 1831-1882.
The data from the Canadian side did not match up, but you have all given me all the answers and I am forever in you debt.
We all descend from 2 brothers John Davie Towgood 1697-1745 Michaiah Towgood 1700-1792 both of Axminster, Devon, England.

Argyl

I am on the BHC site on Facebook as my mums elder half sister was a British Home child in 1909 before my mum was born to granddads second marriage

Aunt nell was his eldest child from his first marriage and his wife died aged 29 in 1905

I do look ups on there for BHC descendants looking for U.K. family history of their own BHC
