I have hit a brick wall, am trying to find the parents of David Richards, I have David's marriage certificate, he was married 15 Aug 1903 to Helena Evans, David was 30, and Helena 29.

David's residence from the certificate is 91 Jones Street, Blaenclydach, Wales.

His fathers name is also David Richards, collier.

I have David and Helena on the 1911 census living at 36 High Street, Mountain Ash, Glamorganshire with their 3 children David Thomas, 4, Edgar James Horace, 2, and Amelia Martha, 1.

Also living with them is David's brother James Richards, collier, age 24, single

I am trying to find David's parents, I know it was going to be a long shot because of the common names but I thought there may be a chance that David senior may have been found on the 1901 census at 91 Jones street but so far I have been unable to find 91 Jones Street in any census records. I have looked on FMP, Ancestry and the Genealogist with no luck so far.

I googled Jones Street and it seems to come under Jones Street, Blaeuclydach, Tonypandy, but I still couldn't find anything.

I looked for a baptism record for David junior but couldn't find one.

I would appreciate it if you could have a quick look for me, but please don't spend too much time on it as there are so many David Richards in the area. It will probably end up being another unsolved mystery. I did look at trees on FMP and Ancestry but they are not well researched enough to be sure that they are correct.

Thank you.

I think James birth place is probably Blaen Clydach in the Rhonda.

Deborah Report 30 Dec 2022 14:23

I have noticed that it is sometimes spelt different ways. I am sure its the same place as its all in the Rhonda.

The family are at 36 High Street, Mountain Ash, Glamorgan in 1921, James not with them, just David, Helena and the 3 children

Ancestry suggests this as David's birth:

RICHARDS, DAVID mmn DAVIES
GRO Reference: 1874 M Quarter in MERTHYR TYDFIL Volume 11A Page 430

However, so far I don't see young David with a brother James born c1887 together in 1891.

Who witnessed the marriage?

If the groom was indeed 30 when he married, his birth would have been somewhat earlier than 1874

Deborah

Deborah Report 30 Dec 2022 14:35

I have seen that 1881 census, and thought it a possibility, but because of the common names I wasn't sure. The problem with the Welsh names is that they repeat themselves through the generations.

Deborah

Deborah Report 30 Dec 2022 14:38

David Lewis and David Thomas Lewis.

1921 census has his age as 48 years and one month.

Trees on Ancestry suggest his parents are DAvid 1829-1903 and Elizabeth Husband 1835 -.

There seems to be no mention of James.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 30 Dec 2022 14:47

The 1921 census was taken on 19 June, so IF (big IF) the info is correct, he would have been born in May 1873, and therefore this would be his birth:

RICHARDS, DAVID mmn EVANS
GRO Reference: 1873 J Quarter in MERTHYR TYDFIL Volume 11A Page 476

???

RICHARDS, JAMES mmn EVANS
GRO Reference: 1887 J Quarter in OF MERTHYR TYDFIL Volume 11A Page 552

As I have been looking into this for so long I will probably order those 2 birth certificates, I will be able to get them on PDF, much cheaper and quicker.

Deborah

Deborah Report 30 Dec 2022 14:56

If Martha Evans is the Mother then probably why Amelia was named Amelia Martha Richards.
