Hi - I have John Teppet marrying Mary Rogers on 19 February 1803 in St Columb Major - should be Tippet.

There may be three baptisms in 1804, 1806 and 1809 but I am trying to find out what happened to JAMES.

James and Mary have two children - Jane in 1846, in Ladock. Elizabeth in 1847 but she dies after a few days.

No sign of them in 1851 - cannot find any deaths, remarriages or ventures abroad.

Have come across a death for James Tippet in April 1860 when the "Romance of the Lee" sinks - he is an "apprentice"....

Phil

Thank you

For our reference:

Vital • England Births and Christenings, 1538-1975
Name Jane Tippett
Sex Female
Christening Date 23 Nov 1845
Christening Place Ladock, Cornwall, England, United Kingdom
Christening Place (Original) Ladock, Cornwall, England
Father's Name James Tippett
Father's Sex Male
Mother's Name Mary
Mother's Sex Female
Event Type Christening

However, I don't think Elizabeth was their child.
There's no father mentioned on the baptism record, implying that this child was illegitimate:

EDIT:
Ah, but here's her birth - she was indeed their daughter:

I would be inclined to think that the 1860 death you found for a James Tippett isn't the correct one.

He would be unlikely to be an apprentice at age 39-ish.

HOWEVER _
The image of this record doesn't say he was an apprentice:

James Tippett
in the UK, Registers of Births, Marriages and Deaths at Sea, 1844-1890
Name: James Tippett
Event Type: Death
Death Date: 9 Feb 1860
Ship: Romance of the Seas

" Drowned. Coast of Africa. Vessel lost."

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 30 Mar 2023 00:21

Can't find anything on Google about the Romance of the Seas.

I wonder if this is supposed to be her - though the date is given here as 5th Feb 1860:

Romance of the Lee United Kingdom The ship was driven ashore and wrecked 200 nautical miles (370 km) west of Alexandria, Egypt with the loss of all but two of her crew. She was on a voyage from Constantinople, Ottoman Empire to an English port.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_shipwrecks_in_February_1860

On looking at the death record again, the name of the ship does look like Romance of the Lee - or possibly Sea.
There's certainly no "s" at the end of the word.

What record did you find saying that the man who died in 1860 was an apprentice?

Phillip

Phillip Report 30 Mar 2023 11:00

It was via the newspaper archive. I'm like you - hard to believe he would be an apprentice at that age.

alviegal Report 31 Mar 2023 16:51

Serious fears are entertained that the well known American clipper ship Romance of the Seas, which has often been to the Thames, has foundered, with all on board. She sailed from Hong Kong on the 31st of December, since which time not the least tidings has been heard of her. The Romance of the Seas was one of the crack ships of Boston, and has made many successful trips from China. She was about 1,500 tons burden, and was largely insured.

Loss of the British Ship Romance of the Lee. Her Majesty's Vice-Consul at Alexandria has forwarded a despatch to the Board of Trade, announcing the total loss of the brig Romance of the Lee, Captain G. Havelock, belonging to Cork,
07 April 1860 - Newcastle Guardian and Tyne Mercury - Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Northumberland

This mentions James Tippett, apprentice as one of the deceased.
The brig was bound for Falmouth.

From the report of William Husband, one of the survivors.

Capt Havelock, master; Mr. W.H. Ireton, mate : Simon Byrne, cook and steward ; William Carson and William Irvine, seamen; and James Tippett, boy.
11 April 1860 - The Cornish Telegraph - Penzance, Cornwall, England

I would think this is definitely not the correct person.

Yes. Without a doubt.

In 1851 Mary is said to be married.

But she could well have been separated or widowed.

Possible second marriage ???

In 1871 there is an Isaac Hanis, 47, with Mary Hanis, 49 and Grandson James J Tippett, possibly the illegitimate son of daughter Jane?
