Hello All

Eliza Toop is my 3rd G Grandmother.

This is her marriage

Name Eliza Toop
Gender Female
Marriage Date 27 Mar 1837
Marriage Place Evercreech, Somerset,England
Spouse
Joseph Southway

I have found her in subsequent Census records until her death, 2nd marriage and her children

However. I know her father was Samuel Toop

I am struggling to find anything about him or Eliza's mother. Could someone have a fresh pair of eyes for me please.

Thanks

Have you looked for Samuel on any census

What about siblings?

When Eliza married for the 2nd time was her father recorded as deceased?
Not 100% correct always, but it might give a guide.

Who were the witnesses?

I imagine she gave the name Samuel for her father when she remarried.

Did she state his occupation?

Try looking on family search , they often have old parish records that aren’t on other sites

I was typing as you posted......... ;-) ;-)

You can't 'know' her father's name, unfortunately. You can only make assumptions based on info she gave in later life

I see you've amended her birth year in your title.

Where does she say she was born?

Delboy1978

Delboy1978 Report 19 Jan 2024 11:27

Yes i reviewed all the census records again and her death record which all gave a circa date of 1815, the 1809 came from 1941 which i know they guessed or rounded up/down so that to me is the odd one out

All the records say she was born on Berkley, Somerset

Have you looked into what records Somerset & Dorset FHS or the Somerset Archives hold?

In the Marriage between her and James Southway in 1837 the witnesses where not her own family it was her husbands family : Ann Southway (James's sister) and Charles Reakes (possible uncle/cousin as his mum MN was Reakes)

In her second marriage to Samuel Clarke the witnesses was Elizabeth Stride (her daughter) and a name I cant read properly.

Unless you can find a baptism, there is very little chance of proving anything

Try the records office………….your only hope, I would say
