I'm trying to find a marriage between Albert Edward Bennett, Born about 1872 in Holloway, London, and Beatrice Ellen Marshall Courtney, born about 1882 in Buttevant Barracks, Co. Cork, Ireland. In 1901 Beatrice is living with her parents in Lanarkshire. In 1911 she's married with one child born in Swansea and two later ones born in Anfield, Liverpool.
On FamilySearch I found a reference to Beatrice's birth and giving 107th Foot.
In 1901 census her father's is shown as Band Master (volunteers) and his place of birth is England (doesn't specify where).
It looks like Albert and Beatrice married somewhere between 1901 and 1911 but I can't find a reference anywhere.
Thanks to anyone who can help.

I've looked on FreeBMD, FindMyPast, Ancestry, and on Scotland's People and cannot find a marriage.

There are lots of marriages for Albert Edward Bennett, and something makes me wonder whether Albert Edward and Beatrice did marry at all, or didn't marry until years later.

Something to consider, and not unusual if Albert Edward was already married but left his wife to live with Beatrice.

nameslessone

nameslessone Report 4 Jul 2025 08:20

Oddly there are only 5 names on that list. Beatrice and George married each other - see 1939 index.

Added: In 1901 Beatrice, age 17, appears to be already using the name Bennett. Needs to be checked but I don't have access to the full scotticsh census page.

Update: This thread ties in with another -they should have been posted together as one

Thank you. Just checked Scotlands People site and found Beatrice in the 1901 census but when I put in the details for the marriage I get no results. I tried to buy credits but the site has my old address and it's not letting me change it. I've contacted them so will wait to hear. I can't understand why I'm not getting any results for the marriage though.

As to the other thread mentioned by nameslessone, yes the families are linked but I didn't want to confuse the two requests.

Good morning! I managed to get a look at the marriage of Alfred and Beatrice.

They were married 14 September 1899 at St. Mary's Episcopal Church, Glasgow.
It's not the easiest read but it gives Albert as a Colour Sergeant, 1st Battalion, Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders, age 27
Parents Henry Bennett, Livestock Inspector and Maria Bennett (and under that M. S. Allum or Allan)

Beatrice is shown as age 18, spinster, Glasgow Street.
Parents shown as William Courtney, Bandmaster, and Polly Courtney and under Polly's name it says M. S. Alford (or that's what it looks like).

Witnesses: James ?? Leith and Maria Eveline Alford Courtney

Under 'Usual Residence' it gives Richmond Barracks for Alfred and Dublin for Beatrice.

Is it usual for both parents to be shown on Scottish marriages?

alviegal

alviegal Report 5 Jul 2025 20:02

Yes Yvonne, Scottish MCs have both parents names on them and also mother's maiden name so very, very helpful.

I think Maria Eveline may be Maud Eveline, a sister of Beatrice.

Jink20 Report 5 Jul 2025 20:55

There is a Bennett, A E Quarter Master 11th Battalion Argyll's who is promoted to hon. Lt 12th March 1915. He is awarded the 14/15 Star, Victory Medal and British War Medal.
Capt Bennett (same person as above) applied for his medals (as Officers had to apply, enlisted were sent them) to be sent to 21 Finchley Road, Anfield, Liverpool.

He applied for an "Oak leaf" in 1920. Oak leaf denotes a Mention in Despatches for gallant or meritorious action in the face of the enemy. A MID can be found in the Gazette.

Wasn't an answer to your question but as the Battalion was mentioned earlier, I thought it may be of interest to you.

If you would like to see the card from which this information was obtained, register and sign in to the National Archives webite. The info can be found here...

Alviegal you're probably right about it being Maud, it is very difficult to read so just made a guess. I wish all marriages showed both parents, it would be extremely helpful.

Thanks Jink20 for the military information, very interesting, and helps to fill out the story so that it's not just names and dates.

Thanks Erika, so she was in the military as well as her husband and boy did they move around a lot.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 9 Jul 2025 08:26

Beatrice wasn't "in the military" herself, Yvonne.

Her FATHER was.
The record posted by ErikaH is Beatrice's birth record.
It shows that she was born in 1881 in Ireland while her father was in the British Armed Forces (107th Foot).

I'm adding to this post. You all gave me some excellent information on Albert Edward Bennett and his wife Beatrice Ellen Marshall Bennet. What I'm trying to find out now is where their daughter, Beatrice Bertha Courtney Bennett was in 1921. She was born in 1908 in Liverpool and I found her in the 1911 census but she doesn't seem to be with the family in 1921. The only Beatrice Bertha that shows up in 1921 is with a completely different family.
Any suggestions?
