I have been researching the BEATS name for about 6 months now and have only recently discovered the names of my GGGrandparents who were ALEXANDER BEATS b 1828 DUNDEE and HELEN KEITH b 1829 DUNDEE. They had 7 children one of whom was my GGrandfather CHARLES BEATS b 1873 DUNDEE. CHARLES married a CATHERINE McLAUCHLAN b 1874. The other children in the family were :-
ALEXANDER b 1856 ISABELLA b 1858 JAMES b 1860 WILLIAM b 1862 ROBERT b 1869 DAVID b 1870 CHARLES b 1873
I am given to understand that DAVID BEATS married a MABEL MITCHELL and had a girl called ISABELLA THOMAS BEATS b 1913. ISABELLA married a DAVID DUNCAN b 1914 and they had 6 children:-
DAVID b 1938 EILEEN b 1940 ALBERT b 1942 ROBERT b 1944 GEORGE b 1952 ISABEL b 1956
All came from around DUNDEE
I am interested to know if there are any living relatives of the above and would love to hear from anyone who recognises these names.
My GGrandparents came to live in GLASGOW after they married in 1893 and had 3 children:- ALEXANDER, MARJORY and CATHERINE. ALEXANDER was my Grandfather and he married a WILLIAMINA BURKE in 1917 and they had 3 children:- ANNE, CHARLES AND ELIZABETH. ELIZABETH is my mother.
Since my last request of trying to find the name Beats, I have had some success with people getting in touch with me. I am now looking for my Great Grandfather Charles Woods Beats b 1876 in DUNDEE, SCOTLAND who apparently went over to the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around the early 1900's to find lodgings and work in Boston and then send for his wife and children to follow him once he had established these. However, this never materialised as the family never heard from him again after a few letters. No one knows what happened to Charles if he died or met someone else. I am wondering if there is anyone especially in America who might recognise his name and come forward. If anyone does I would be delighted to hear from them.

Hi Lesley,
I am having great difficulty reading your message and I am sure that others will find the same and not bother with it ??
Not meaning to be unkind but could you take off the caps lock and put in a few full stops and white spaces please?
I am sure you would get more of a response if you did that.

Hope you don't mind:
Haven't been in to messages for a long time now.
I am now looking for my great grandfather Charles Beats b 1872 in Dundee, Scotland. He left Scotland for the United States between 1900 and 1920. I am given to understand that he went to Boston, Massachusetts to get work and then send for his wife and 3 children.
From what I can gather Charles wrote only once and was never heard from again leaving his family in Scotland bereft. He might have died soon after arriving in the USA or moved to another town or city.
I recently went on holiday to Australia to a Beats relative and was told that someone from America had got in touch with my cousin asking him about Charles beats. My cousin not knowing that Charles Beats had gone to the USA was unable to give an answer to the person who called. Would love to hear from anyone who might know of a Beats in the US

Hello Lesley,
As you state you are looking for other people who may know about the Beats family etc., then it would be worthwhile putting the names you are researching into the Search Trees box above (in the dark green bar).
There are quite a few members on this site who have the name Beats/Dundee/USA etc. in their trees. If you find a connection, you can contact the tree owners for further info.

Hi everyone who has taken the time to look into Charles Beats and answer my question regarding him. It is very much appreciated. My cousin in Australia must take after Charles as he has dark hair, dark complexion and dark blue eyes and is around the same height. I am wondering if Charles Beats ever got married to anyone in the U.S. or fathered a child there as someone from the U.S phoned my cousin in Australia asking if they might be related. My cousin who didn't know about Charles as he has lived all his life either in New Zealand and Australia and didn't know the story of Charles wasn't able to help the person who phoned. Would have been good if he had.
Thank you again all who answered.

pm from Lesley:
"Thank you for replying to my thread. The information is invaluable. I am mystified at Charles giving his next of kin as Helen Beats as that was his mothers name. He was married to Catherine Beats nee McLauchlan. Am unsure as how to get further information on Charles Beats as I am not subscribed to any other website for genealogy and have only standard membership for Genes Reunited."
Have replied saying I'll send original image for Lesley to check out what she thinks the name on the passenger list might be (hard to read).
I can't see Charles Beats on US 1930 census or a US death - can anyone else see anything? Perhaps he moved elsewhere, especially as Lesley says above that her cousin down under fits his description.

Lesley, two things:
1 - go to your first post on this thread and click "Edit", you can then alter the heading to include the words US & Australia. That way, people who are a lot more experienced than myself should spot it and be able to help.
2 - how is the name Beats pronounced? What does it rhyme with? For example, the poet William Butler Yeats' surname is pronounced "Yates" whereas the poet John Keats' name is pronounced "Keets". So if Beats was pronounced "Bates" then there's a chance he could be recorded as that somewhere.
