P.S. There's a Henry Buckler - right age - described as brother in law, living with a family called Chester - that's NOT my Edwin Henry Butler. Another variation on the spelling is Buttler.

Maggie in Leics Report 17 Oct 2005 17:38

Ooops - sorry - leaving that message was the last thing I did before I dashed out of the door!! Back from W & G which was very funny!! Edwin Henry Butler married Agnes Crawford Heatherill in Leicester in July 1895. In 1891 he is living with his widowed dad, maiden aunt and a servant and has been transcribed as Edwyn Gerry Buker!! That one took a bit of finding too!! In 1861 his dad was transcribed as Bulter, and other Butlers have been transcribed as Butter. In 1881 there is an Edwin Alfred Butler born in Syston who was a cousin of Edwin Henry. He lived to a ripe old age as my dad - who was born in 1931 - remembers him, and we have a lovely photo of him as an old man!! Edwin Henry went on to join the family pharmaceutical business.

Maggie before you go, when did he marry the girl from glasgow and have you found him later?

Maggie in Leics

Maggie in Leics Report 17 Oct 2005 12:52

Jess, Sorry to confuse you - no - that's his parents/sister/aunt in 1881. His dad was Edward Henry born 1831 Leicester. If you manage to find EdWIN Henry born 1868 Leicester in 1881 you will succeed where many have failed!! He's even been searched for in Scotland as he eventually married a girl from Glasgow!! Any more questions I'll have to answer later as am off to see Wallace and Grommit!! Thanks for your interest. Maggie Will keep everything crossed in the cinema for the house....

Guinevere Report 17 Oct 2005 12:07

Hi Jess, Thanks for looking for him. I'm sure that isn't our Rees, though. None of the Powells had skills of any kind and wouldn't have been able to afford the training. She says he did marry and had children but she cannot remember any names. Our branch moved from the valleys and lost touch with the rest of the family when her grandfather died. I've looked for likely deaths and burials but the time scale is too big. I'm sure you can guess how many potential marriages I've found.............. Thanks again for looking, Gwynne

Your Aunt doesn't remeber if he married or had children i suppose - they dont usually! Nothing to tie this one in - a bootmaker kind of dismisses him, unless the ennumerater was hard of hearing and mis heard boat as boot.. Guinevere

Guinevere Report 17 Oct 2005 11:24

Hi Jess, If you want a real challenge maybe you can find Rees/Rhys Powell for me. He was born in 1840 in Brecon. I have him on the '41, '51 and '61 census but nothing after that. He was the brother of my gt gt grandfather and, according to my Aunt was still alive in the early 1900s. In 1841 he was living in Llantarnum, Monmouthshire with his parents Benjamin and Elizabeth (and siblings). Similarly in 1851, his father was a boatman. By 1861 he was a forgeman but still living with his parents in Llantarnum. In 1871 his father is widowed and still living in the same place with his daughter (he stayed there until his death). Rees' brother Benjamin was working as a labourer in Maesgwartha, Brec but Rees is nowhere to be seen. I've looked in all census in England and Wales up to and including the 1901 and just cannot find anyone who could be him. Family lore (which has been fairly accurate) has it that he went back to running barges along the Brecon and Monmouth canal and did very well for himself. Gwynne
