Benjamin Report 15 Mar 2005 16:57

Hi Joan I was just wondering whether you had found any Margaret Coombs burials in St James, Westminster from March 1821 to March 1830 in the Bishops Transcripts they hold, mine was born in June 1817, and I am just trying to find if she died young as I cannot find any marriage for her on on any censuses. She was my ggg grandfathers older sister. Thanks Ben

Hello Joan I'd really appreciate a look up next time you're at the LMA if you're not overwhelmed with requests. I'm looking for a baptism for William August Howe 1818-1820 in either Marlebone or Westminster (both places appear on census returns as place of birth). On one of his marriage certs father is Robert Howe tailor and think his mother was called Sarah. Any help that you can give would be much appreciated. I'm epileptic with two toddlers which makes travelling to London difficult. Of course don't worry if the request is too vague or you're not going again for a while. Regards Debs

Hi Benjamin I'm up to the end of May 1827 and no sign of Margaret so far. Next Tuesday I should have the remainder 1830 completed. Joan x

Hello Deborah I’ll willingly look at what registers the LMA holds for Marylebone and Westminster but it isn’t many. Westminster Archives will have better coverage. Joan x

Hi Joan, Please don't think I am being pushy, but I wondered if you found any info on my gg grandmother Sarah Sinclair aged 63 born Holborn? Middx. on the 1881 census she was in the Stepney Workhouse, St Leonards St ,London Middx. Did she die there, and any other info there is? Hope you didn't mind me putting another message on the site. Regards Vera

I am desperate for birth details of my grandmother, Hannah Jane Harris, born 1871/72 in Hackney, father Charles Harris, brickmaker (in 1892). Not found yet on the 1881 census. Married 1892 at St Mark church, Old Street, for which I have the original parish certificate giving her age as 20. Any sightings MOST welcome.

Joan Can you help to find the burial site of a Francis Harvey d1868 in Shoreditch,London. If you need the death date I will be able to supply that to you tomorrow. I don't know how many Cemeterys there were near to Shoreditch at that time, but could you find out for me please? Kindest Regards Sean Harvey (GGG Grandson)

Hi Vera Bromley House seems to be the Stepney Union Workhouse in St.Leonard Street and unfortunately, the admissions and discharge registers are unfit and are not on film. I've searched the creed registers from 1880-1885 and there’s no sign of Sarah Sinclair. I’ve searched the death register for Bromley House from 1881-1900 and never found her death during that time. Do you know which year she died ? Joan x

Vera Report 16 Mar 2005 20:46

Hi Joan. Thank you for doing this research for me. Sorry, I don't know when she died, only she was on the 1881 census, but not on the 1891 census. I thought she still might have been in the workhouse when she died, but it certainly does not look like that. I will have to do a bit more research. Thanks again for your time. Best Wishes Vera

Sean If you google Victorian London Cemeteries you'll find a very helpful site with information of various burial sites in London. People weren't always buried where they died. Joan x

Hi Vera Sorry, I should have said what they were. The creed registers list the inmates denomination, whether they are Anglican, Catholic or whatever. Joan x

Hi Sean Someone dying in Shoreditch may not have been buried there. If you google Victorian London Cemeteries you'll find a site called Gods Acre. It's very informative about London burials. Joan x
