But the Peter Joseph who died in Australia was born circa 1908 and the Peter Joseph who you say is "your" Joseph's son must have been born after the marriage in 1930 - or am I getting confused?

Well, not necessarily.

Various possibilities -

(a) the man at Pansy Street is a different Joseph Fegan;
(b) he's the right man, but had a new partner, also called Mary;
(c) he didn't leave Mary until 1950 at earliest . (From what you said earlier, 1944 seems to be what the family think, but not necessarily fact.)
or
(d) the ER had not been updated since his departure.
