No marriage of a John Harrison to a Julia in London between 1895 and 1903

I'm suspecting John is already married and didn't legally marry Julia

Do you know if you can search just using the reference given?

Good thought. Am trying to pin him down with either Sarah Agnes or Eliza in 1901 but no luck yet. I suppose it is possible they met up between census night in 1901 and 1903, but it doesn't really help age-wise.

After all, he could have been 18 in 1903 or he could have been 48.

But I haven't given up yet . . .

There is no marriage between a John Harrison and any woman called Bassett between 1895 and 1908

Going to try some surname variants

So, if they never married, John must have been with Julia when they registered Winifred? Because if your not married you can't register a child in someones name, unless they go with you.

What about Bateman...This is the name given on Winifred's death cert' by one of her daughters....don't know where she got that from.

Julia could have lied.
I'm not sure how many checks were done on whether someone really was married.

Does Julia's death cert give information about her place of birth?

Have you got John Harrison's death cert?

I don't know whether this is any help - it just occurred to me that Bassett may have been mistranscribed as something else. Or, looking at this 1891 census record, could Bassett be an anglicisation??

1891 - 19 and 21 Collis Street, Pentonville

Jules Bassel Head 36 occ Painter b. Paris
Fanny Bassel Wife 36 b. Lydney Gloucester
Corinne Bassel Daur 13 b. St Andrews London
Julia Bassel Daur 8 b. St Pancras

There's a John Harrison born 1879 Penrith who is a window cleaner in 1901. He's in Lancs though.

No marriages of a John Harrison to either a Bassett or a Bateman in London.........ever!!!

So he didn't even make an honest woman of her.

That one I found above looks like she could be

Julia Annie M Basset Sep qtr 1882 Pancras 1b 68

Thinking on the possibility of them not marrying, could it be that one or both was married to a partner they couldn't divorce and they just set up home together as a couple? Somebody said above about the information on the birth certificate but I suppose the information is only as true/honest/accurate as the person who gives it. I'm not sure if they would have checked up on them.

If, say, John registered the birth, said the mother was the former Julia Bassett, I have a feeling they would have taken his word for it.

T.J. Report 23 Feb 2008 23:26

Sue, I haven't got Julia's or John's death cert'..Only Winifred's and that says London.

Kate...you may have hit the jackpot!!! Because I have a note from my cousin, mentioning someone was French on my Grandmother's side of the family.

Rose...I don't know where John was born..so could be.

I like the Bassel

But he didn't marry her either!!!

I reckon he was still married to his actual wife when he died before his daughter married.
