The Roath lot are proving very difficult!
I can't send for the birth cert of John Roath until I can find his birth.
I have:
John Roaf as the father of George Frederick b1857 B'ham - a burnisher (b cert)
John Roath age 20 m Roseanna Spinks in 1857 (m.cert)
John age 22 on 1861 census

age 31 on 1871 census

died 1920 age 82
Then there is a John James Roath b 27 Nov 1833 on IGI but the age isn't consistent with what I;ve found.
ANy idea what my next step should be please? I'd really appreciate advice here.
Thanks
Jill

EDIT If this is him and the year of birth is correct 1837, he may not have been registered, birth registeration only came in on July 1st 1837...and wasn`t compulsory until later, many people were not registered..

On the marriage cert to Roseanna, who is shown as John's father and what occupation.
Who were the witnesses?

I don't think that IS him Nicky as the children don't 'fit'. But I hadn't seen that one. There do seem to be a lot of John Roaths in the records considering how unusual the name is.
'My' John married three times to Rosanna, Dessey and Harriet (and THAT search proved complicated enough but was eventually solved thanks to help on here!)
but thanks anyway

His marriage cert. will give his fathers name....Have you located him in 1841 and 1851 with his parents? Maybe the age given will help you narrow down the search if it is consistent with 1837 like the others...

Sorry Gwyn, I forgot to say his father was James - hence I was alerted by the IGI of John son of James and Jane but the birth date was earlier.

That's the one,PollyPoppet!

So your not sure the 1911 entry I gave is him ?

Is Stanley the Coachman in 1911, not the same one in 1881 age 1?

Yes - John married Harriet in 1877

Jilliflower

Jilliflower Report 19 Jun 2010 23:20

I don't think so Nicky. That family are on the 1891 census with a wife called Ellen who hasn't shown on my radar yet.

Nickydownsouth

Nickydownsouth Report 19 Jun 2010 23:25

Ellen couldn`t have been a 4th wife could she??

Looks like this could be Harriets death. or do you have her with John in 1891 and 1901?

Well, that's a thought! I hadn't followed the Harriet marriage at all as my line came through his first wife, Rosanna via George Roath. But I bet youre right about ANOTHER marriage. I must get round to counting all his children by four wives.

Nickydownsouth

Nickydownsouth Report 19 Jun 2010 23:32

So whos child is this then? She has the names of his 1st 2 wives....!!! How weird is that??

Yes, Dessey Rosanna was my grandfather's sister!
She was the daughter of George Roath, son of John.

I think I am going to have to resort to Parish records to find John, but I did want to try and pin him down a bit more. I did wonder if he had knocked a few years off his age and was actually born in 1833. Although the ages are consistent in all the records.
My grandfather. Bert Roath, didn't know his age or his birthday until he sent for his birth cert to claim his pension.
