Im a bit stumped. Being new to tracing my family tree im unsure how to trace my fathers side of the family without knowing where members of his family were born. Ive managed to trace back his grandmothers side and her mothers side and so on via census records but when tracing the male bloodline i get stuck at tracing his fathers father due to missing records.

For some strange reason i cannot find any marriage records for his Grandmother (Ellen Lindsey Lamb) to his Grandfather (who i believe to be called Charles William Thomson). However i can find a record of Ellen's second marriage to a gent by the name of McQuade in 1922 and the birth of their son Thomas. The records show an Ellen Thompson marrying. This is the same woman but the P in the surname is making things tricky, it's a common spelling mistake of our family name.

Does anyone have any idea how i can continue to trace my Thomson bloodline at this point? On my grandfathers marriage cert it says his father was a Petty Officer in the Navy, family stories say he died at Sea. I can find men by the name of Charles Thomson who died at sea prior to 1944 but their age doesnt tally with someone able to be the father of a 24yr old George (in 1944 he married Freda Prince who then had my father).

Here is what info i have.

Ellen Lindsey Lamb - Born 1885 Sunderland Durham (Died Ellen Lindsay McQuade Doncaster 1978)
Mother to George H Thomson born 1920 Durham (Died 1967)
Ellen Thompson marries Thomas McQuade 1922 (yet no marriage is listed for an Ellen to a Thomson or Thompson 4+/- years to 1920)

The record of Ellens marriage to my great grandfather is the key to me being able to trace the Thomsons further back. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Sorry for the long and complex post.

Many Thanks

Marriages Dec 1908

CLARK Walter William Sculcoates 9d 273
LAMB Ellen Lindsay Sculcoates 9d 273 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>
SHEPPARD Alice Maud Sculcoates 9d 273
THOMPSON Charles William Sculcoates 9d 273 >>>>>>>>

Why would you assume her first marriage should be 4+/- years to 1920 when she was born 1885

Kathleen, that could be about right if he was of similar age to Ellen (born 1885). We believe some of my family line comes from Scotland so i was half expecting Charles to have been born North but some of the family did settle in Yorkshire

Pork_Pie, youve got it, i know my Dads got an aunt called Vera, uncle Charles (named after his fathers sake) and also a Kathy who is the only child to change their name to McQuade when their mother remarried. How did you manage to find those records so quickly? Ive been searching since last night! Thank you so much :D

Ive just been viewing the records on here. I dont have a lot of money so ive paid for one month here to view unlimited records.

The Thompson surname definitely seems to have the "p" in it on all of these records.

Not really the best site for research although the community boards are very good for getting help.

Try a 14 day free trial to Findmypast or Ancestry (if they are still doing them).

Im on Ancestry, registered for the 14day free trial last night but in order to view records i have to buy credits. Yes back in those days they didnt really care much for the correct spelling on official records but i have been assured that we are "Thomsons" haha. Im still very new to it so im not entirely sure on the best methods of research.

KathleenBell

KathleenBell Report 25 Aug 2012 20:39

You shouldn't have to buy credits if you have a 14 day free trial. It's a couple of years since I had a subscription to Ancestry but perhaps Roy can help with how to see the records.
