The information I have on John 1760 and Ann 1764 is that they had several children as you say, the names I have are Maria 1786, Benjamin 1788, James 1791, Mary 1796, another James 1799, another Maria 1801, Robert 1802, Smith 1803 and Edward 1807 so not sure if Smith is really robert!!! although I found records for Robert Utting and Mary nee boyce and that is how I traced my great grandmother who gave birth in the union workhouse Swaffham!!! Will try and research as you say the smith utting to see what I can come up with. Once again thank you so much for the help you have given me so far.

ok.

all the family were born in sporle,so here is were you should be looking,
they used the virgin mary church in sporle,
children of john & ann.

maria 1786,
benjamin 1788,
james 1791,
mary 1796,
james 1799,
maria 1801,
robert 1802,
smith 1803,
edward 1807.

children of robert & mary.

mary ann 1826,
edward 1828,
sarah ann 1830,
elizabeth 1833,
james 1835,
as robert's children were born in sporle i would look for record's for the virgin mary at sporle, and then do surrounding churches.

john 1760 & anne 1764 had quite a few children ,the child born 1803 was called smith utting,if you google this name a lot of info can be gained ready to varify, there does not seem to be a robert born 1802,if smith was robert it should be easy to find detail's on him.

Hi Martyn
I don't know when or where James was baptised but he was born on 20th October 1855 in the union workhouse Swaffham, so that could be the right information.
I have now got information on his grandparents, Sarah Ann's parents, they were Robert Utting born 1802& Mary Uttiing (nee Boyce) born 1806 and have managed to go back another generation to Robert's parents John born 1760 & Anne Utting (nee Smythe) born 1764, so have progressed a bit further. am now trying to find marriage and death details for those last generations!!

Sheila Report 11 Jan 2013 20:38

Have now found out that Sarah Ann Utting did marry a John Fox in 1858 and he died in 1868 and she then married Robert Bensley in 1872 have found a census record of 1881 in which he is the head, Sarah is the wife and James Utting age 25 her son which she had in the Union Workhouse Swaffham, on his birth certificate the father is unknown so can only presume he was illegitimate!!. I have tried various websites to find records of the workhouse but think a lot of them were probably destroyed.
Am trying to find death details of Robert Bensley but can't find any that tie in with his date of birth which is c1821. Thank you for the help you have given me it has enabled me to put in place more details on my tree.

James & Phoebe Utting had other children besides Percy who died, they were William Albert my Grandfather and Maud , Ethel and Hilda my Great Aunts.

Sheila

Sheila Report 11 Jan 2013 18:42

I don't think Sarah Anne had anymore children, but of course I was going down the wrong route by looking at surname fox, Percy I think you said was James & Phoebe's child!! I did join Norfolk family history society yesterday, but as yet I am waiting to be able to log on, they said it could be a couple of weeks before I can!! I have got a death certificate for Phoebe which records her name as Lusher she was widow of Robert Lusher and all the details you have given me on her are the same and I have just noticed that the informant of the death is her son in law whom I have verified with my other data.
Will now go onto the Norfolk family history society and hopefully will be able to log on.

phoebe did marry again in june 1928 to a robert lusher.

martynsue

martynsue Report 11 Jan 2013 18:28

norfolk family history society it is only about £12 per year,
as she has the surname bensley on the memorial i think that would be the way to go,
did they have any more children after percy?
i will see if i can find a second marriage for phoebe.

Sheila

Sheila Report 11 Jan 2013 18:19

Thanks once again. They are my relations. James Utting was my Great Grandfather, he was born in in the Union Workhouse Swaffham, at the time I don't think his mother Sarah was married as her name on the birth certificate is Utting, I have been researching her and came up with a marriage between her and a John Fox which I think now maybe wrong as I had also found a marriage to a man called Bensley so will investigate that further. Phoebe Utting was James' wife I believe, I seem to remember my late mother thought that Phoebe had married again, but don't think that can be true. Have you found out all this information on the Norfolk family history site?
Will now try to piece together all information, very time consuming but exciting!!!

Sheila

Sheila Report 11 Jan 2013 16:55

Thanks for latest information. But I don't think they are related to the Uttings I have found, although I have a John, James, Mary and Ann Utting in my tree the dates do not match. When I get a chance I will find all the details I have and double check to see if maybe I have other Utting's with the same name and dates which match. Thank you so much for taking the time to look, the trouble is there are so many Utting's from that area. When I first started searching I thought it would be easy as I thought the name was unusual!!!!

Sheila Report 11 Jan 2013 16:44

At the moment I only have to hand two death certificates on which the date of first one is Frederick Utting died 17th Feb 1911 at Saham Toney and James Utting died 4th December 1922
