I have a similar family in my husbands tree. They claimed parish relief before the kids went into care, and because of that I was able to find info at the records office under parish poor law.

If you refer to the service record images, they can be seen on Ancestry.

Take out a 14-day free trial, and you will be able to download them to your computer

Thank to everyone for your efforts.
I would love to see the images if possible.
I have learned a lot that I did not know before about my grandfather.

I wonder if his poor eyesight ( which it says he had as a child but had worsened during service) may have been a problem in getting work when he retuurned to civilian life?

Val. am sitting here looking up yr family. Have googled Lma and hammer smith and Fulham archives. Couldn't find anything.. For me to go to hammer smith archives I need to book an appointment. I can ring tomorrow and try and get an appointment but being open ten to four only is a bit of a bugger... I have written everything down so let me know if you want me to make an appointment. Kim

British Army WWI Pension Records 1914-1920 about William Henry Richard Buck
Name: William Henry Richard Buck
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1882
Age at enlistment: 29
Birth Parish: Peckham
Birth County: Middlesex
Document Year: 1911
Regimental Number: 1144
Regiment Name: 1st. Batt. Coy L. (Reg. Fus.)
Number of images: 15

a second lot of images, wife as per known, and marriage to Grace Burgess at Poland st registry office, Sep 3rd 1909

also a letter written by him in 1921 to ask for his war medals.

I looked at military records, because I wondered if the children were fostered because parents were coping with war injuries? but I can't see anything of that nature, but it does appear that his claim for a pension was "rejected".

I have trouble attaching records but perhaps someone else can send the images if you haven't got them ?

Ethel BUCK siblings VALETTA GRACE 1st December 1914 FULHAM.and GEORGE HENRY born 13th March 1913 Marylebone.
I did not know if William and Grace got back together later. I was interested to hear that they were in 1939.
When I went to the LMA I was told that as I couldn't find anything it may mean that they were fostered under a private arrangement with their father. I know they went to the first foster home and because they were not looked after they were sent to Ditchling in Sussex to be fostered..
Don't know anymore than that .Is it worth looking and where.

Something else doesn't add up here, William & Grace were still together in 1939 - are on the ERs at 2 Boscombe Road, Hammersmith (and at various other addresses in Hammersmith since 1933).

Ethel Winifred Buck born 17/5/1911, 25 Stone St Shepards Bush, brother George Henry born 13/3/13 St Christophers Blds, Wigmore St. Parents William Henry Richard Buck, and Grace Adelaide Burgess (married 13/9/1909, reg office).

All according the William's military record - he enlisted 23/3/11, discharged 27/4/15. Acknowledged his medals 24/11/21, address Lime Grove Shepards Bush.

Just thought some dates would help in trying to find the school/home they were placed.

Added: There are a number of trees on ancestry with the younger child Grace on them, giving same parents details - may be worth contacting tree owners to see if they can give you more.

Flip Report 21 Jul 2013 07:26

There is an unsourced tree on Ancestry, giving dob of 17/5/11 for Ethel, with parents William Buck 1881-1957 and Grace Adelaide Burgess ?-1941. Valerie has both these people in her tree, so I'm assuming it could be her tree.

2 more likely children born to that couple, George H 1913 and Grace E 1914, but we really need more from Valerie.
