Most of the people who help out on the boards also subscribe to either Ancestry, or Findmypast and if feeling flush, both!

Each have their strengths and weaknesses as does GR and compliment each other.

All these sites including GR hold census 1841-1911 and the gro index. They each have other records unique to themselves. It really depends on your area of research for you to decide if one is preferable to another.

You can usually look at their databases without subscribing, or make 'free' searches, then ask on here for a look-up if you think the results might be relevant.

It's always worth googling the area + parish records as there may be free resources on the net.

Always consider

plus a host of others!

This thread lists a host of FH sites

:-( I don't use FMP so looks like I miss this one. Sounds like a great resource though, hopefully it will be added on here soon :-)

I am quite new to all of this, am I allowed to ask if you all subscribe to lots of sites? I'm not looking for recommendations, costs or anything like that, just out of curiosity as at the moment I'm more than happy with GR!

Thanks,
Sharon

We are on it too too 2002 after that we took the option to opt out/

What i dont like though is our daughter& grandchild show on it which was a problem 10 years ago that her ex may find where she was living . he made her life a misery and she divorced him. It was her second marriage and not granddaughters dad.

Thank goodness she moved and has remarried and her daughter has now grown and isn't living at home so hopefully he wont still be looking for her. She is opted out now too so no chance hopefully

TOWIE is set in Brentwood and spent about 13 years of my married life there....Applied for a pub in Chelmsford once, probably closed down by now.

Not seen Geordie Shore MC...then I probably would not understand them :-D

TOWIE gives you a bad name, huh! How do you think us up north feel about Geordie Shore?

Having great fun with that ER jax - thanks.

Janet Report 12 Mar 2013 20:34

Chelmsford has ideas above its station !........it's only a small cathedral ;-)

was a sleepy backend of nowhere when I moved here 30 years ago from Loughton. Not a bad place to live now though by all accounts

TOWIE gives us a bad name !!

jax

jax Report 12 Mar 2013 20:26

Small world :-)

I have probably driven through there, when joining the M11 and it looks like Stanstead airport has taken over most of that area now.

I'm near where the big pier is :-D

I always thought Chelmsford was a city anyway, because it has a Cathedral

Janet

Janet Report 12 Mar 2013 20:08

Really that's where my dad was born and married, both sets of grandparents lived there (and dad lived in Takeley as a child for a while too)

I'm in Chelmsford (now a city so they say !)

I am on the ER with my husband in 2002 but left him in 2001 with my parents in 2005 and my current address 2010/11 (opted out now) not sure where I was the other years.

I'm in Essex aswell.....Essex ancestors were from Takely and Grays but all ended up in Walthamstow
