This chat is about renaming the packages. I seem to recall reading somewhere that consideration is being given to renaming Genes Reunited as DC Thomson Family History.

Worldwide membership of Ancestry means just that. If they have it I can view it. Even if it is put up on the site after I have renewed.
Platinum membership on here means that I have to pay to see some of the records all of the time.

There are ‘worldwide’ records coming up on FMP.COM (don’t know if they are also available on FMP.CO.UK??)

I would like to know what the future plans are for GR vis-à-vis FMP COM & UK?

When I subscribed a few weeks ago it was expressly in order to be able to communicate with members about genetic genealogy projects I am involved in. I was really quite amazed at the price charged just to be able to post messages and contact members via tree searches.

Messages can be posted at numerous other sites for no charge, and the boards are infinitely better organized and have much better features. And trees can be searched more fully and messages sent for no charge elsewhere as well. I pay for access to a range of records elsewhere, and there are other free resources like FreeBMD besides, so I subscribed here simply on the no stone unturned theory to look for potential project participants.

I now see in the description you linked to:

'You’ll enjoy the same features as the Platinum package, but you only get access to the non-indexed births, marriage and death records.'

I have no idea what that even means. (Does it really mean that by paying here, you get less than you get free of charge at FreeBMD?) Would a person considering a subscription here have any better idea?

As the two 'memberships' are really completely different animals, I think they should have completely different names.

'Platinum' is an actual subscription -- to access records -- as well as allowing for communication. Its functions are: research and communication.

'Standard' provides access to the communication and tree-making functions and is not a subscription to anything of any significance. Its function is: communication.

So I'd see the distinction as something like

Family Research
and
Family Connections

And I certainly agree that calling something 'Platinum' and then charging extra for access to some available records on top is misleading. Platinum implies 'get it all'. Unless there is a Diamond subscription or something.

Are we ever going to get feedback from GR on the suggestions made on these threads???

Reggie I kind of agree with your following statment... GR MUST be up front with people paying the extra subs about EXACTLY what they can get on here

only I would have written... GR MUST be up front with people paying the extra subs about EXACTLY what they WILL get on here.

It's about time GR was honest with the paying members they have & the new up & coming members they may have.

It may be a good idea if GR was to sort out the problems they have with the site befor worrying about what they will call the new membership packages & uping the membership fees.

A resounding NO to Tony's wild suggestion

Having read the various posts, I've had a re-think about 'Full'

But, it's tricky to come up with an alternative which gives an accurate picture.

Would 'advanced' fit the bill?

And I reiterate.............GR MUST be up front with people paying the extra subs about EXACTLY what they can get on here...............not, as seems to be the case at present, letting them think they can get access to every record which is on all other sites

I agree with Chris In Sussex but on the free membership they should not be allowed to hit the RR button.

I don't like the word "Starter". It makes it sound as if one would eventually move up to full membership. I would never move up to paying for records on GR and I don't like being called a starter. I've been on the site since 2004 and have more than 18,000 posts. I'm no starter!

Starter and Access to All

Penny

Penny Report 29 Mar 2013 21:24

starter membershp
with the option to 'top up' to enhanced membership, whilst making clear exactly which records can be accessed.

( dont like the idea of full- it suggests those that dont want topay to access records here are less than full members- we are all full members of the site by joining it)

I agree with Sylvia & GB

a definite NO NO to Tony's suggestion.

Like many others I generally only use this site for the fun of helping others

I too would leave this site if that happened - am waiting to see what my renewal sub (in May) comes out at anyway!

Chris in Sussex

Chris in Sussex Report 25 Mar 2013 00:38

How about....

Free - As it is at the present time

Community Subscription - What is now 'Standard Member'.
So access to everything but the records.

Full Subscription - Access to all the site offers....No restrictions.

But it does need to be 'explained' clearly exactly what someone is buying/signing up to at the time of purchase.

Another No for the suggestion made by Tony.

This site, nor FMP, have the records that are of interest to me.

If that suggestion was taken up by GR then I would be leaving this site.

Basic subscription and full subscription if one can access all records that is.

why should we pay the high cost of Platinum when we never use the records on here ................ reason being two-fold

1. We don't need to use them because we have subs in other sites where we actually get better records

2. many of us have actually completed our trees, and access the records on other sites only to help others .................. and if you can't find the record on here, we go look elsewhere.

GR has to pay for the records they have ................. either to another site for allowing access (most commonly I think to their sister site fmp), or for transcription

so for members to get access to the records for the Standard rate means that GR will probably not be able to afford the records.

Catch-22

One result of increasing the sub for Standard members really means that thousands of current members will leave. That probably means all the current helpers will be gone.

Tonymedic

Tonymedic Report 23 Mar 2013 15:22

I think there should be just one payment for the full package what could be easier the newcomer and the more experianced can get as much or as little info they want.
