I am trying to establish what no Prince Street Mary Northwood lived at in 1841 and why she was there. There was 13 other occupants none of which were related to her. Mary was 20 at the time so she was possibly a servant! Also I would like help finding out anything about Jacob Hagues who she later married. I knw the ended up living in Auburn House and having twin boys but that's about it. Thank you

Edit: Sorry...see it is Bridlington.

The 1841 image says she is a F.S. which is probably Farm Servant.

Probably second marriage for Mary, the mother of Jacob.

F S = Female Servant

No house numbers on the census record................such things were virtually unheard-of until after the introduction of the national postal system

In 1841, ages of over-15's were rounded-down to the nearest 5, so Mary's age would have been anything from 20 to 24.

Have you got the marriage certificate of Mary to Jacob, which will have more information about him?

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 11 Aug 2013 08:53

If he knew his father, the name will be on the marriage cert

Can't help but feel we are talking about more than one Jacob Hagues.

You need the 1841 marriage certificate for Jacob's age and father's name.

EDIT: Sorry 1842 marriage

Here's a newspaper article about Jacob's death:

Publication:York Herald
Publication date:Saturday 28 November 1846

Article text:
"On Sunday night, about eight o'clock, Mr. Jacob Hague, of Auburn House, near Bridlington, having returned from market in his usual good state of health, and having eaten a hearty supper, went to procure a lantern to supper up his cattle, when he fell down on the floor, and instantly expired.

He was 77 years of age and leaves a widow and three young children. VERDICT: Died by the visitation of God."

Given his age at death it seems highly likely that the 1841 that Pam posted for Jacob is the right one, especially as his age may have been rounded down. That Jacob does live at Auburn, too.

The 1851 shows that Mary's two sons aren't twins but are fairly close in age. It would be interesting to know if the daughter Emma was Jacob's or if Mary already had her when she met him.

As it is the 1841 census, there is no clue to relationships

The information I have received is wonderful but now wondering were did Mary Northwood go to when Jacob died? Also had Jacob been married before? What had he been doing all his life? Can you please help again Thank you

Pam

Pam Report 12 Aug 2013 08:24

I posted the 1851 census which appears to be Mary and the children with George Marrett. Mary has taken the name Marrett but I didn't find a marriage.

To find info about Jacob........buy the marriage cert

Or try looking for records at..............................

https://familysearch.org/

.............there is a possible baptism for him...............and possible first marriage.

I won't deprive you of the pleasure of finding them yourself................but bear in mind that without the 1842 marriage cert, you have nothing with which to verify that the records are for the right person
