I have found a newspaper report of 5 young boys stealing a writing desk from mrs Mcpherson's home.My ancestor Nimrod Gardner + William laycock were the older ones ;The case was remanded how do i found out what the verdict was ?

Whatever the verdict was it didn't seem to deter them .In 1864 Nimrod +William are back in the news aged 13 -14 (Cheshire Observer 2 feb 1867) for breaking into a druggist shop with a 3rd boy Richard Davies; Again sent for trial ...try ancestry criminal pages .

I found a page from Birkenhead court records from the 1867 case;
the 3 boys were given prison sentences of 21 day ;the definition of the crime is rather illegible.(Larceny ,something something?)

ps Alisoun the 1st boy is listed as James Nimrod Gardner so may not be the eldest son of our Nimrod Gardner.

The 1867 crime for James Nimrod Gardner isn't larceny, that's the entry underneath. For James Nimrod Gardner and friends it's 'Feloniously breaking and entering a dwelling house and stealing therein?'

They did get 10 strokes with a birch rod as well as the 21 days.

The boy is listed as James Nimrod Garner in the criminal register, but just as Nimrod Gardner in the 02 February 1867 - Cheshire Observer report.

Is the 8 yr old boy James Gardner, who drowned at Morpeth Docks near Birkenhead when fishing for crabs a relative? The article says he was the son of Nimrod Gardner of Fore-Street, Birkenhead.

gosh Kucinta i don't know how you managed to decipher that .

The newspaper reports I read said they'd broken into a shop in 1967 and a house in 1964 ;there were also reports in the liverpool daily post on march 25th and march 26th 1864 but I didn't have enough credits to read them .

the drowned boy was Richard Gardner (james b.1874 was still alive in 1891)
He was the son of Nimrod +Mary
Article said body not yet discovered ...I wonder if the death certificate would show if he was found.
Their eldest son was Nimrod b1853 so i am not sure if he is the tearaway in the papers or if this could be a cousin ...Nimrod was a family names . The court records threw a spanner with the 1st name James .

There seemed to be quite a few newspaper reports for a Nimrod Gardner of Bugbrooke, Northants, was he an ancestor of the Birkenhead Nimrods? I noticed Nimrod husband of Mary came from Northants.

It's quite a good name to work with I should think.

what was the punishment for the little boys for the first break in at Claughton road?

Detective work ; if you can find those boys on census 1861/71 you could find how near they lived to Nimrod junior (at Fore st in 1961 and presumably in 1967 when his father Nimrod a plate-layer was in the same paper as a witness to railway theft)

The other 10-11yr old boys were John Gibson, Richard Lewis and Daniel Jones but I suppose their names are too common for such census searches.

Yes Kucinta ;Nimrod was born in Bugbrooke as was his grandfather Nimrod;
Nimrod Junior was born in Helsby Cheshire the name is more common than you would think !

A search for the other boys may reveal the court punishments for 1864 if anyone on ancestry would mind looking ; I don't have time to go to library today

RE the Bugbrooke chap. It's 1858-1859. Seems to be taking issue with the Bugbrooke Society for not giving him sick pay, and whether he is half blind, dicky hip etc.or possibly swinging the lead...

Kucinta I did find that one but it didn't make enough sense for me to pay to view image ; It says he's a cripple I don't think mine was and His grandfather Nimrod had died by then .....just how many Nimrod gardners can there be !!
