Still can't find Esau's return to UK though.

GlitterBaby Report 21 Jan 2015 11:18

Does Anthony Adolph charge GR for this service or does he use it to get business for himself ?

MargaretM Report 21 Jan 2015 11:30

He's a professional genealogist with his own business. I doubt that he does anything for free.

Cynthia Report 21 Jan 2015 13:47

Looks as though I had better let the posters know how to return to this thread! *sigh*

Cynthia Report 21 Jan 2015 14:15

It looks as though someone else is researching the Kelsall family......

MargaretM Report 21 Jan 2015 15:13

Perhaps you should be getting paid for the service of letting folks know that they have replies, Cynthia. I for one really appreciate it but I doubt that GR does.

SylviaInCanada Report 21 Jan 2015 17:38

Cyn's help in letting people know they have replies is very much appreciated by the members ........ I have seen the gratitude expressed by many for her help.

lel Report 21 Jan 2015 17:49

Thanks Cynthia for letting me know that I have had some replies to me query on Esau James Webb.

Thank you all for your help in looking for Esau and I will be looking up the leads you have given me.

Cynthia Report 21 Jan 2015 18:11

Aw.....shucks..... :-D

Linda Report 21 Jan 2015 21:40

Thank you for the reply....Looks as though I'm stumped then!

Cynthia Report 21 Jan 2015 21:55

Linda, why not post the details of whom you are looking for? It's quite possible that someone could give you some advice as to what else to do. Cx

SylviaInCanada Report 22 Jan 2015 00:26

re-post your question on the Find Ancestors Board .........

......... you'll get the member helpers working and beavering away to find the information needed.

There's someone around 24/7 ....... and we all have knowledge of different sites to try :-D

JoonieCloonie Report 23 Jan 2015 02:00

yes well done MC, and just to add too re Esau Webb

his name is given correctly in the Canadian government database of Home Children ... that one is free to search and very accurate and should always be used instead of Ancestry (or at least alongside Ancestry)
(same for WWI Canadian soldiers)

I will break up the URL for the search page so it doesn't stretch across monitors

this is the new link to replace the one that mgnv put in the old thread that Chris linked to ... I wonder why lel didn't follow that up and mention it in this thread ...

Cynthia when you contact people it is always after the fact and hit and miss no matter how excellent a job you do, and wouldn't it be nice if the website owners would just put in big bold letters when people start a thread:

CLICK ** Add to My Watched Threads **
and then we will send you a notification, to the email address
in your account info, when someone replies.

just like it says at the bottom of all my posts :-)

MarieCeleste Report 23 Jan 2015 08:11

Thanks for confirming my previous post about Esau's Home Child record Joonie. Always good to have verification.

Cynthia Report 23 Jan 2015 11:47

The problem is, Joonie - so many people do not read any guidelines at all.

Also, the ' Watched Threads' facility has been known to be very hit and miss at times. I always advise folk to us 'My Threads' when they return here. :-)

JoonieCloonie Report 23 Jan 2015 16:40

definitely My Threads too of course, I always say the same as the first line of defence, and the posting instructions should clearly say both ... not in some random pinned thread that no one will ever read, but right *in your face* when you start a thread !

but if someone is not a regular visitor and a new person replies to their thread a year from now, Watched Threads could get them an email that will get their attention :-)

I've found it to be working okay for the last little while ... but then my Inbox worked fine for a year and then thwarted me (as everybody else's did) this week :-S

MarieCeleste Report 23 Jan 2015 20:56

If I remember correctly (and if I don't someone else sure will!) about a couple of years back GR launched a "pop-up" that appeared when people started a new thread - it gave guidelines similar to those in the "Help Clinic".

It didn't seem to last long but I actually thought it was a good idea ......

SylviaInCanada Report 24 Jan 2015 01:30

you're remembering correctly, MC :-)

Reg Report 29 Jan 2015 14:06

My 4 x Grandmother, Ann Mayhew (nee Hill) and her children appear in the censuses of 1841 to 1881, with the exception of 1861 (No trace of them despite extensive searching). In 1871 & 1881 all are shown as born in various parts of London.

However, in the 1851 Census, for "Where Born" each family member is shown as "British Subject". This seems rather strange. No one else on that page of the Census is designated in that way. Is this just eccentric recording/form filling or is there some other significance in this ?

I'd much appreciate your view. Reg Mayhew

I have seen comments on old threads about AA's 'help'.................less than complimentary
