Hi All,
I am wondering if there is any hope of finding anything....

My grandfather was born back in the late 1930s, ........ we have been told that his mother is Scottish (I know this as I have her in my tree and all her details) but she always maintained that my grandfathers dad was a Polish soldier who came over during the war, they had a fling and the result was my grandfather..........

His mum passed away and never revealed his dads name so we are left wondering.....

Is there anyway we would be able to trace anything at all? Would a birth have to be recorded? Would there be anything at all?

Margaret Helen Crockett
Born in Kilmaron in approx 1918

Any advice gratefully accepted as Id love to find this missing piece..

Well his birth should be recorded but may not have a father's name on it

Where was he born as not seeing in on freebmd

So he was born in Scotland

Yes that is him, born in Cupar. x

As his surname was registered as Crockett, it seems unlikely that his father will have been named on the cert.

The birth record is on Scotlands People.

I just wondered if maybe there would of been some sort of announcement or anything of his birth but as he is illegitimate I am seriously doubting it.

I would doubt that any father is named on the cert

As she was living in Fife, the "Fife Free Press" is the most likely paper for an announcement - though I agree, it's unlikely if her son was illegitimate.

His mother was in the Army.

The only Polish forces I can find in Cupar at that time is the 1st Rifle Bgd (I'm presuming that means Brigade)

Maybe a later husband and Margaret adopted her child and a birth father's name would appear on the adoption papers?

Did the birth father pay any maintenance for his child?
If so, there might be a record of the order somewhere.

If his Mother was in the army you may be able to get her records - which may or may not give any information. They will cost £30 and may take a while to arrive.

Sometimes a mother might appeal to the courts- 'paternity decrees'- they certainly had them in Scotland. Not sure when they stopped.
Have you done a DNA test yet? That will tell you if the Polish soldier is a myth or not.
Get his birh cert and as greyghost suggests, any military info. as soon as you can.
The cost is well worth it and will give other info even f not what you were looking for.

MEg - I have had a DNA test done and the Polish bloodline is indeed confirmed so not a myth - I did wonder myself though to be honest.

I have also ordered his mothers army records as well and am still waiting on them arriving. I will be ordering his birth certificate this weekend too

So definitely the right one but still no luck finding his actual father

There has always been a difference between English and Scottish law and regulations governing registration of births. I think, from 1875 on in England, the father of an illeg. birth could be named on a birth certificate. One proviso was that both the mother and the father had to agree to this - initially they both had to go to the registrar together, but this was later relaxed so the father could go to any registrar in England (or maybe even the UK), and was later relaxed even further to allow the father to send in a form - if signed abroad, it had to signed before a notary or equivalent (I just came across a New Brunswick birth that was modified by a statement sworn before a Nova Scotia JP)> The mother had to countersign thiese distant applications to indicate her approval.

On the other hand, there was no restriction nor checking on who he named as parents on his marriage registration, nor who an informant named as his parents on a death registration.

I looked at this birth cert yesterday whilst at the GRO
Mother registered the birth.

No father is listed
(mother's occupation had no connection to the forces or women's land army)
